Title: Jeweling bridge - Jigmaster .
Post by: Mattman NZ on May 11, 2014, 09:17:01 AM
Hi guys I picked up two Jigmasters a week ago and was a bit bored so decided to make up one really good one out of two and have a few spare parts for later mods etc.
1st ive striped and this is what ive got to work with .
(http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad223/mattman1965/a001_zps2d87e72a.jpg) (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/mattman1965/media/a001_zps2d87e72a.jpg.html)

Soaked in white vinegar for a few days and a light scuff with a small wire wheel on the end of the dremel and is now looking a bit better.Ive already drilled and pressed in pins for the extra dog .

(http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad223/mattman1965/a002_zpsa063f559.jpg) (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/mattman1965/media/a002_zpsa063f559.jpg.html)
The outside of the bridge plate .
(http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad223/mattman1965/a003_zps40b6fbf3.jpg) (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/mattman1965/media/a003_zps40b6fbf3.jpg.html)

Now the jewling .I had to make up a tool using an old rc aireal - rubber - old drill bit and some strong two pot mix glue. I cut the aerial tube about 1 1/2'' and inside dia is just over 1/4''.Sharpend one end of the tube by putting a chamfer both inside and out .I'm using this to cut the rubber plug which will end up glued inside the tube and leave 4 to 5mm sticking out .I then cut 1'' off an old drill bit and glued this inside the tube snug up against the rubber and this will also stop the tube from being crushed in the chuck.

Just about ready to do some jewling.
(http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad223/mattman1965/DSCF1224_zps23377a9f.jpg) (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/mattman1965/media/DSCF1224_zps23377a9f.jpg.html)
1st test peice with a fine valve cutting compound for about 5 to 8 secconds.
(http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad223/mattman1965/a004_zps9f0b6943.jpg) (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/mattman1965/media/a004_zps9f0b6943.jpg.html)
Just trying to get the fish scale effect just right.
(http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad223/mattman1965/a005_zpse2fe9f5d.jpg) (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/mattman1965/media/a005_zpse2fe9f5d.jpg.html)
Everything seem to be spot on now - the double dog bridge.
(http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad223/mattman1965/a006_zpsdede311c.jpg) (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/mattman1965/media/a006_zpsdede311c.jpg.html)
Just about finished.
(http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad223/mattman1965/a007_zps25385cfd.jpg) (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/mattman1965/media/a007_zps25385cfd.jpg.html)
Just have to be careful when trying to get the excess cutting compound off the work surface using hot water and soap liquid and dab dry with soft tissue and this is the end result.
(http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad223/mattman1965/a008_zps45a70bc4.jpg) (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/mattman1965/media/a008_zps45a70bc4.jpg.html)
(http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad223/mattman1965/a010_zpsf6471582.jpg) (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/mattman1965/media/a010_zpsf6471582.jpg.html)
Now putting everything together - found out by turning the 2nd dog over and putting the spring post towards the center i didn't have to remove anything from the housing.
(http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad223/mattman1965/DSCF1208_zps7df3e318.jpg) (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/mattman1965/media/DSCF1208_zps7df3e318.jpg.html)
Maingear and some grease.
(http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad223/mattman1965/DSCF1210_zps7a9cfbd3.jpg) (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/mattman1965/media/DSCF1210_zps7a9cfbd3.jpg.html)
All Done hope you like. :)

That "jeweling" is the same that Pfleuger Atlapacs had. Those were the top of the line for Pfleuger.

Beautiful.  Too bad you have to open the reel to appreciate it.

He'll appreciate it the next time he opens it and all the lube is still in place. That is the true functional advantage of engine turning.

Very nice work there Matt ,what did you make of the gears in it when you opened it up? And any reassembled pics yet?

Thanks guys - The accuplate framed one had chrome over steel and the spare had brass and both had
the updated Ht 100 drag washers - one brass and the spare had stainless washers. I tried the chromed main gear and it seemed kind a noisy. Id like to countersink the stainless domed reel seat bolts inside the accuplate frame - about 1.5mm maybe 2mm and get the frame re anodised - I might even have a go and do it myself .Nothing like a good challenge aye. The delmar arrived this afternoon and its very similar to the rare 286 with the stippled side plates. Cheers.
Matt...

Amazing what we can create when we get bored and have energetic hands and creative minds.

jewelling-tools you can get in gun repair shops or e.g. from

Hi guys I opened up the Delmar 285 today and this is what I found.lol. funny thing none of the parts had numbers on them not even the bridge . I gave it a good clean and decided to make up a smaller tool - just over 4mm and jewel everything .
(http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad223/mattman1965/DSCF1231_zps68caaa42.jpg) (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/mattman1965/media/DSCF1231_zps68caaa42.jpg.html)

And after 150+ drops with the tool between 5 to 8 sec per drop it took just over an hour .With no skip between rows and with a slight overlap in parallel the scale changes from right to left at a 45deg angle insted of straight up and down.

Give it a go Tech and post your success pics in here its really easy to do - drill press and a cheap compound vice and i've even heard of guys doing it freehand.I've done a few Mauser bolts 20+
years ago and they still look nice done with a homemade wire - stainless works best for harder metals and a dryer cutting compound.

Thanks Sal yep postage would be a real killer probably more than what the bridges are worth :-[ :-[ - I've been waiting for my son to drop me off some stainless sheet but he was a no show so I found a stainless washer and did a few passes with the small jeweling tool and same cutting compound I used on the brass bridges .The pics i've taken don't really  do the jeweled surface justice but heres a pic of the stainless washer.
