Title: Lipstick and Mascera: Penn 149 Reel?
Post by: Ken_D on May 23, 2014, 06:08:39 PM
I know zip about Penn reels, except for the 1,2,309,  the 310,20,30, 340,45 and some of the early senator types.  I note that the 149's as seen on the 'bay, and elsewhere come with no chrome dressup rings on the outside of the sideplates.  The plates seem to have a bit of a rebate, suggesting that chrome rings _would_ fit.

That's the question: are the chromed outer rings for some of the other big narrow reels going to fit, and are they still out there. Thanks. Kenneth D.

The outer Penn 49 rings are close but don't fit a 149. BTW: The 149 has the same spool and cross posts as a 49, but slower gears and less drag.

The 149 side plates are not cut for an outer ring.

Better off without those "beauty" rings.
In my experience they split, and  are purely cosmetic.
Replacements are  expensive and a PITA to fit.

Acknowledged.... A rodster here in town showed me a pic of one of the other reels, in the family, with the rings... after which I said I had a plain Jane 149, no outer rings.. that could be re-locatable to the sport's abode. Cheers, KD
