Title: Wrong drag washers?
Post by: FatTuna on August 29, 2014, 09:38:50 PM
Hey guys. I'm swapping out the old asbestos drag on a 14/0 for my friend. I put the new drag washers in that I got with the new metals. The reel felt a little funny. Also the drag didn't feel all there. In inspecting the drag washers inside the gear there was more of a gap then I've noticed in other reels. It also seems like the drag stack is too short. This one is a really old 14/0, the metals and washers for the new 14/0 should fit in the gear, right?

I'm pretty sure these are 12/0 washer but I just want to make sure because they are sending me new ones and want the old ones back. Also, my buddy wants to use the reel this weekend to go fishing.

Thanks.

14/0 drags should be 38mm OD. I punch my 12/0's with a 1 1/4" punch. Roughly 32mm.

Thanks. I just measured it. It's pretty close to 38mm. Hmm, maybe it's just me.

The new drag stack should work with the old 14/0, right?

Is it normal for the drag washers to be slightly smaller then the metal washers?

Yes,
It will work. The gears should accommodate a 7 stack. Steel or Bronze.

You may need another thin washer of delrin or stainless on top o the stack, as the star wheel may bottom out on the side plate, you may find that to be the case after you run the drags in a couple times.

The way I set mine up. I usually add a flat and then the Belleville. With the star backed all the way off, very slight drag. That way you won't bottom out and once they get seated, the light drag will go away and you will have freespool with the star backed all the way out.

Hey does it matter if I use the original washer under the main gear with the new stack? Here is a pic of the drag stack. I feel like the original was a little thicker.

Also, if you look at the second picture you can see how there is a gap between the carbon fiber washer and the edge of the main gear. Is that normal?

One more thing, do you put a little grease on the end of the gear sleeve to allow the star to move freely?

Sean,
As long as the under gear washer is in good shape, you can reuse it. I usually find that they are brittle and crack trying to remove them. Delrin is ideal here.
I usually get Cal's all over the end of the sleeve putting in the drags, so that is good enough for lubing the end for the star. I never really noticed the gap that the carbon fiber leaves in between the gear and on the outside of the metals. I guess it is normal. More reason to roll your own. ;)

Hey Daron, your the man.

I have to meet my buddy tomorrow morning to give him his reel and now I feel confident in the new drag setup. Thanks.

It's cool how these reels allow you access to the drag without taking the whole reel apart. I wish my small senators had that.
