Commercial guys in the south Pacific use a similar thing they call a "dangler" that looks like a gin pole on the gunnel. They dangle a plastic squid on 1000# mono just above the surface as they chum the ahi right up to the boat, then swing it aboard immediately on the strike. The fish is unable to get its head back in the water, so it literally swims aboard.
Not necessarily sporting, and can be devestating to the shins and ankles!
