How does a reel with this much sand in it still function and look like new on the outside?
It would only turn about a half a crank. I was hoping to just find it dried out on the inside.
Crap! Its a Sand Trap! >:( How did all this get in there?
I couldn't hear the dogs clicking, but the anti reverse worked. They are froze up.
Don't judge a book by its cover. ::)
Wow Wait till you try to pull the bearings I hope you have a good puller Doug
That looks like a friend gave someone bad advice, "Why use grease when nature give us so much natural lubricants, just go pack the reel with sand and salt water." Sorry someone pull one over on you, good time to find a brass main and pinon I guess.
You are lucky the screws came out. I see them like that a few times a year. Why do anything till it quits working???
When Daron is done with this reel -- it will function very well.
That is these old Penn reels, for you...
Try that sand trick with a graphite (marketing description for plastic) reel, and cheap gears -- and you will be fortunate to salvage the crank, and just throw the rest in the trash bin.
Looking forward to seeing the finished product.
Best,
Fred
The reel came yesterday and I couldn't wait to get home from work and open it up. Boy, was I disappointed. I told the seller to credit me $25 and we would call it even. I can save her.
Keith, I use a small impact driver to remove stubborn screws. A regular screwdriver wasn't going to work here. I don't think it was saltwater. The main bearing came right off the gear. I think its creek silt.
The hard part is going to be getting all the grit out. ::)
So Daron is going to take of Golf now. Watch out for Sand Traps.
sh,try the vinegar trick for an hour or two
to get you started ;)

No Golf Mike. I Despise it!
Looks like someone was building sand castles at the beach and forgot their shovel and that reel was ALL they had to dig with. I see a few like that from time to time. Even had some that were worst if you can believe that!
Last time I had something like that I had to use a bead blaster to remove the sand. It had bonded with rust and corrosion to the metal.
If you need any parts let me know. I seen to have an over stock of these parts.
I sent you a pm Keith.
I finally got time to go through this Sand trap. The bearings took a little persuasion with a Hammer, but I got them out, removed the shields, re oiled and replaced.

I used WD-40, simple green and some wire brushing with the dremel to bring this reel back to working condition.

Everything greased. Ready to wrap this up.

Down to the pivot, I got this. No parts needed. I Prevail!

your a marvel MR SHEEN ;)
Hey Daron --
Those are some of the best before and after pictures I have ever seen.
Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes ---
Great work!
What parts did you replace?
Best,
Fred
I remember saving one of my dad's reels (an older SS) from a similar plight when I was 11 years old...kinda light the reel repair flame in me. These reels are noteworthy for their ability to rise from the dead. Good job Daron! That one looked rough.
Daron, you da man... Dominick
I wouldn't be surprised if that reel in its condition would have still been able to catch fish, those are sand mills.
Very nice job cleaning it up, I didn't think it would have came out as it did. ;)
Nice sand save for a par there Daron. Good work.
The reel turned out great. Daron! I couldn't have done any better. BTW The only use I've ever found for a golf ball is as a target at the range!
Bob
Nice work Shark!

None ;D
Daron --
Your before and after pictures would have made a powerful advertisement for Penn reels -- of course that would be in the past -- not with the new graphite (technical word for plastic) reels with cheaper innards.
Same thing goes for "hole in the wall" (Dave's) Penn Squidder restoration.
Best,
Fred
Strong work! ;)
Nice work Sharky.
Rgds
Mark
Thanks Everyone for the positive comments. ;)
I know this is a little late but, that is incredible! I am a big fan of small reels and to see that thing back from what is basically the dead, wow.
I don't have a single SS but this sure increases my appreciation for them. Along with those tiny Dam Quicks of Foakes.
Almost makes me want to pick one up just to play with. Ah, I can't though until I make some room in the garage.
Much respect Shark Hunter.
Nice recovery job on the Penn Spinner.
hmmmmmm.....Budweiser and Glucosamine?.......which one do you find is the better joint conditioner? I'm using Osteo Bioflex for my knees. As I recall from many years ago the Bud made them feel good but kinda wobbly at times. :o ;D :D
The Glucosamine when I'm at work, The Bud when I'm not. ;D
I pulled something in my shoulder last summer. The Glucosamine really helped. I haven't taken it in about 6 months.
Congrats and applause for the truly amazing restoration, Mr. Shark! You are a reel artisan par excellence. Furthermore, your appreciation for classic Penn SS spinners (which I share, BTW) indicates a level of discernment bordering on genius. ;D
Bravo!
~A~
Thank you Aiala. ;D
Lovely job Daron :)
There is something personally satisfying about taking an old damaged reel and making it functional again. Doing it without replacing parts makes it even more so. Good job :)
Thanks,
I already have another on the way. ;) I'm hoping it has Brass gears. ::)
Maybe it was underwater and someone found it washed up on the beach. I can't imagine how that amount of sand could get in there.
You do some amazing work Shark.
Only from what I have learned Here. I didn't do it alone. ;)
I have two more upgrades for the sand trap. A Set of Brass Gears from my Buddy Larry and a power handle all the way from England from my Main Man, Mike! ;D
Today was my 24th wedding anniversary. It snuck up on me. After work, I showed up with roses, a card and of course the Chocolates. My wife said "they are so pretty, let me take a picture." I said. let me put a reel in front of it first. :D
Then I took my picture. ;) Forgive my clutter. I have to migrate my stuff from the table for the big feast coming up! I married a good woman! ;D
i'm sure your wife loved the reel! ;D
Daron you are a brave man.
Jan and I had our 24th back in September, I didn't dare put the 9/0 I had just acquired on the table with her flowers :-X
Ok,
The Brave Man is getting this done. ;D
The pinion gear and bearing was a little tough to get out, but I did it.
This is the difference between the alloy main gear and pinion on the left and the brass one on the right.
I made sure the mesh was Ok with the new gears. I only want to do this once.
I put the crosswind in and the handle. Its a Go! ;D
Look at that beautiful reel! What an incredible transformation.
Simply extraordinary, Mr. Shark. <Shaking head in wonder> Truly! :o
~A~
Well done Daron, looks stunning.
Good work Shark!
I reely like the choice of handle, a perfect match...
Really nice job Daron! How hard was it to remove the bearings , aside from the cleanup I thought that would be the most difficult part without doing damage to the housing Doug
Outstanding job there Daron. That handle is really cool looking and I know where that one came from. Pretty work buddy.

The main gear bearings weren't that tough Doug. I just supported the case with pieces of wood and found a correct size metal sleeve and knocked them out. The pinion bearing proved to be tougher.
I don't have a puller small enough for this, so I just thought for a minute. I have a steering wheel puller that might have worked, but I was afraid of cracking the case. I used a crescent wrench on the pinion. I put the nut on the end of the pinion and slid the jaws under it. Turned the reel over and hit the crescent with a hammer. It took a couple good whacks, and I alternated sides. That baby was in there! But If anything broke, it would have been the pinion I was taking out or the nut attached to it. I knew if I tried to push it out from the inside, I would have broke the support.
Very clever solution might have to try that one myself if I need to Doug
I get bored sometimes and look through old posts. Sometimes it is more Gratifying and It keeps me off Ebay, Buying more.

There is alot of great info buried in the older posts here. I like to peruse some of them periodically.
Daron,
Did you hear about that monster Hammerhead from the sand?
Wow Daron...this makes me want to go find a complete piece of crap and rebuild it. I'm glad you resurfaced this thread...I've been looking through the archives but hadn't seen this one. Great work! 8)

That's the one.
Getting good release is particularly valuable to the population on these big females. The GOM (and Atlantic in general) Hammerheads are doing much better (moving towards recovery) then their Pacific counterparts.
How long will it take for the saltwater to eat away the hook?
steve
Daron I just know you had fun bringing that sucker back from an early grave. We live for those challenges. Good job. Dominick
great job like always daron nice, way to go. harryk
