Title: Unusual Aluminum 501 Spool
Post by: Vintage Offshore Tackle on November 02, 2014, 10:42:07 PM
Someone spent some time on this.  It appears to have been machined from a solid piece of aluminum.  I've never seen another like it.  It spins beautifully, but it's a bit on the heavy side.  Does anyone know who might have made it?

Amazing! May I ask where you got it from?

If its for sale, what do you need to have for it?

I would love to trade it for a nice Newell spool for the Bluefin Special if you have one that you would be willing to cut loose.  I've had it for ten years or so and I hadn't thought about selling it.

No, I don't have any of those, sorry. I'm a Penn guy, all I have is one Newell 220 and I couldn't trade it for anything.
...This is to everyone else.
If any of you are interested in this spool and you happen to have what he needs, please don't feel bad about it, go for it!

Thanks putting the word out for me Sal.  I'm a Penn guy too, but growing up in So. Cal., we were suckers for the latest aftermarket trick parts for our Penns from Newell, Lee Pro, Baja Pacific and Accurate.  I still have a pretty good stash of all of that stuff.

I was I still had my Newell spool...alas I sold it when I finished selling my converted Newell.  PM newel nut or visit the Ulua Huntas website.  Some should have what your looking for.

Sal, do you have any nice Penn 24-56 handles with colored knobs or left side plates for the 505/506HS that you might want to trade?  If you would rather talk than type, you can reach me at 805-748-9202.

Thanks,

Randy

Randy, I was collecting those with 3 holes and got rid of them last year, I had many colors. I believe I had 15 of them, I got over $30 for some.

Tiburon has a run of BFS sets in stock, I'm not certain they would fit a Newell kit but you might call them.

Hi Randy --

If any of these 24-56s would help -- let me know.

Then I can just send you some handles -- and you can send Sal the spool.

Best,

Fred

Thanks Fred, but those are 24-66 handles.  I need the 24-56 handles, which are not counterbalanced and have three holes for adjusting the length.

Guys, I thank you very much, you are amazing. Keep in mind, if you need anything that I could help with, you already know I'm here.
On the spool, I think I'm going to wait until early next year, if Alan Chui says he will make these available, I'm sure they will happen, he hasn't let me down yet.
I hope he does make these for everyone that needs them, the 146 will also be nice, but they need to be at a reasonable price...we'll see.
Thanks again guys.

Thanks, Randy --

My mistake -- sorry I misunderstood.

I will check what I have when I get home tonight -- but it will be late since I am helping run a voting poll precinct location -- and will be pretty late getting home.

Just trying to get this spool for Sal -- since he helps so many people on this Board -- but if it doesn't work out -- that is OK too.

What is your location, Randy?  I probably need to come over to visit you sometime.

All the Best,

Fred

Hey vintage.  A very Italian custom is; when you know someone wants something and you have it you just give it to him.  There are no guarantees but something good will come back to you.  PM me for Sal's address if you want.  Dominick

That is so true Dominick. Sal finally taught me the way and I have been sending parts to people all over the world. If I don't need it, I give it. ;) Comes back 10 fold! ;D
I just sent a guy a set of gears for a 114H to Tasmania. He was thrilled! ;D I have a get well package on the way to my Man Harry! I wish I could be there when he opens it! ;)
All I Have is 24-57 two Hole. These are from the 114H. Scott's sells these for $34! Wow! :o

It was Mr. Jason Groombridge. I felt guilty for making him wait so long. I couldn't figure out which was the 9/0 pinion or the 114H. I finally tore a couple reels apart and sent him what he needed.
He has to be the most patient individual I have ever met here besides the Boss. He was rewarded and so was I by his patience and the feeling of making someone Happy, and by getting their reel working again. Compliments of Alantani.com!

I received the spool, thanks Randy. At times when you need it done, you need to do it yourself.
From my first inspection, I noticed a little rub mark onone edge, I got a little concerned so I decided to mount it on my accurate.
The spool is spinning perfectly, I'm actually amazed that it isn't rubbing anywhere, this thing is crazy tight to the plate.
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/007-13.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/pescatore1/media/007-13.jpg.html)
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/011-9.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/pescatore1/media/011-9.jpg.html)
I used black Pearl's spacer bars to test it and I kind of like the look, there is 1/8" of space on the plate by the gear, but that could also be a good thing, as to let heat escape. I could find a way to seal it, but for now this is how I'm going to leave it.

NICE!! Great match up with the accuplates. The spool looks more shallow than a standard 501. Is it?
