I am hooked on the look of narrow reels. I notice a lot of reels that are narrowed using aftermarket kits. Are there narrows that be made using all penn parts. I found a post that used a penn long beach and 4/0.
Some spacers, bars and real foot are interchangeable able the problem you might run into is the spool
There was a factory narrow 4/0 on Craigslist. Sal said it was called a "grouper special". http://sarasota.craigslist.org/spo/4778334315.html

Yes there are but most will be converting one stock Penn reel to another. One that's not a stock reel is a Surfmaster 250 sideplate on a 501 frame, another is a 500 side plate on a 99 frame.
All good info IMO, and if you want to convert a reel you have finding some of the parts may be a problem and costly. Not that is a bad thing , I have converted several reels myself and love to fish them. But, as far as several manufactures are concerned like Penn they have made narrowed reels a stock item. In many cases you can get a stock narrowed reel with a better design, upgreaded feature and with newer materials all ready built into them for less of a cost of building one from a older reel. Yeah I know, where would be the fun in that.
Another reel that can be easily narrowed is the 259 but its not a take apart like the jig master /99. I just put together a 501 using a 259 side plate and it works fine . Doug
I do both but like the guys driving antique cars or hotrods there's something about them some of us love. I have HX 2 speed reels that work extremely well for deep water Pacific halibut but I use my 349H's. They are far from stock with Newell aluminum spools, 113H gear sleeves, SS AR dogs, 7 and 9 CF washer drag stacks, 505 spacer bars and my handle arms with Alan's handles. I have a left hand 113H gear sleeve that I plan on building a 349H lefty with as soon as I but another aluminum spool....the price is the thing holding me back but they are as rare as unobtainum.

Good call sharkman, I too have fallen prey to the ultra sleek look of todays modified narrowed penns. Function should always come first, but looks sure go a long ways as well. Just don't tell my wife I said that or she'll know I been cheating on her with some of my favorite reels.
Ted
I like the narrow look also...
the Penn 500 Jigmaster is a great 30lb reel to fish in SoCal, but seems too wide. The 501 doesn't seem to hold enough line for me, thats why i like the 99-sized (mid).
Here is a some pics of the reel I've used during this year's epic season.
its my sleeper reel. it has a few upgrades...
-AT SS gear sleeve
-Black Pearls SS bridge with double dogs, yoke and jack
-Bryan's 5+1 drag system
-Newell Spool
Penn 30-66 stand
Penn 37-65 frame post
Penn 24-56 handle
and now Black Pearls SS 4:1 gear set

Nice reels, my 99 width Jigmasters (3) are all Tib kits.
Here are my narrows and how I made them.

There was a factory narrow 4/0 on Craigslist. Sal said it was called a "grouper special". http://sarasota.craigslist.org/spo/4778334315.html
That reel isn't a narrowed 4/0. It is a Penn 49 Mariner, a completely different animal.
I am also "narrow minded" and prefer narrow reels. If I need a reel with more line capacity, then I'll get a larger reel. For example, if my 501 isn't large enough, then I'll use a 349 Master Mariner.

You're right George, it is a 49.
I never did see the pic till now, he called it a 4/0 slim, we call the 4/0 slim with black plates a Grouper Special.
I thought I knew what a 49 looked like :-\, I believe I held one of those in my hands before ;D
I just found the email from fsrmn, all I got was one pic of the reel with the handle up. I took a quick glance at it and thought he was talking about the 113.
Good job investigating George, I would have never thought a seller would have called a 49 a 4/0.
Just to chime in I too like the narrow reels. the wider the reel the more handle wobble is produced it seems, with spectra lines most narrow,s hold plenty of line. I like the tib narrow frames too. kinda like putting mag wheels on your old pickup. makes it run better! I saw a post awhile ago were a guy narrowed a penn international 30 or 50 2 speeder. it was waay cool looking as he did a good job on it..........maybe that's another inspiration?
I like the narrows also. Here's my line-up.

From left to right...114htn triple dogged with all the SS currently available. 112htn double alternating dogs with all the available SS parts. Newell G454-F narrow( how'd that get in there? ::) ) and a 506 Tib'ed out with double alternating dogs and SS bling. All were used this season except for the Newell. Next year!
I went back to the posting and took a closer look myself. It definitely says Penn No.49. The seller must have confused the 9 with an O. Kind of like the 5/0 that was posted a few months ago or the 114-N before that ::)

Very nice Bob, I didn't know you also had the 112HN. I like those knobs, but they did drive me a little crazy though, the top part kept unscrewing itself. Nothing that a drop of blue loctite couldn't fix ;)
Sal
Hey Sharkman, you can't go wrong with narrows. That's all I grew up with using thanks to my Dad. Here's a few of mine. From left to right 1#149 DeepSea, 3#49 DeepSea's, 1#49 MasterMariner, 1#349 MasterMariner Black, 1#349H MasterMariner Red. I also have 2 more 349H's on my trolling polls set up with wire. I like them because I have short fingers and they are easier to thumb the line for me.
Capt.RMF nice collection. I like the narrows because it's just easier to lay line back on the spool. I'm just lazy ;)
Sal, I agree. They do come apart with the top unscrewing. Usually at a very bad time. Had that happen on a fish once. What I did was use two part epoxy. When I need to separate the top from the bottom I just apply a little heat from a lighter and it frees up the epoxy. They were relatively cheap knobs and I like them best for jigging. The 112hn was the one we talked about in a much earlier thread. This is the one we wished that the tiburon kit matched the color of the penn side plates better. I still wish that. Anyway, it's an awesome jigging reel

Good job investigating George, I would have never thought a seller would have called a 49 a 4/0.
I once saw an ebay seller listing a 349 Wahoo Special as a Senator. I questioned him and he corrected it. Many sellers don't do their homework, and unless you are aware of what you're actually bidding on, buyer beware.
BTW I really love the narrow Long Beach 66 in Penn Chronology's collection.
Correction: that is a narrowed Long Beach 60.
Some of my friends that aren't members here also like narrows, A few used my 25 on my boat and really liked it, so here I am building some for them ::)

I love the old side plates and have a 2 unused ones for Surfmasters.
You already know how many 100's I have ;D. The left plate on the Surfmasters is definitely one of my favorite. These all have the smaller gears (5-155), but don't underestimate them, they'll do just fine. This is a nice 10lbs reel.
Here is a factory narrow not mentioned much. Penn 130. It's not strong but had to buy because in very good condition.

Can't ask for a better reel for shallow rock fish, 20'-100'.
I don't see why anyone would buy a little Avet when you can build a little narrow Penn for much less that is a much more enjoyable reel. I love my 180s and I'll never forget catching a yellowtail with a little monofil. Love them, love them, love them.

I see there are a lot of narrow-minded people here. ::)
Thanks for sharing your photos, members. Nice reels. I'll take a narrow reel any day over a wide one.
BTW Sharkman, I have to disagree on your assessment that the 130 Sailfisher is not a strong reel. The reel foot, gears, and other components look beefy to me. The 130 is also a favorite of mine.

love my narrow reals as well. narrow 113h narrow 501 narrow 505 all have the available stainless steel parts inside of them. I have caught some big fish with them.Sal I have that one altogether and using it, just don't have the pictures with me to post.when I get back to Florida I will post up all of mine narrow reels.
This is my newest narrow...Cal Sheets cow special. If you look close ( sorry about the poor pic.- still in the learning mode ) you'll notice the frame has been machined out and a custom spool installed to add an additional 150 yds 130 JB Hollow to the standard capacity of a 50 VSX. A custom 1:1 low gear has also been installed. This will be be my go to for upcoming 15 day end of Jan.

A 15 day in the cow pasture at the right time, man I'm jealous. Please give a report when you get back.
Very nice reel. Are the lugs for the rod brace or harness? They appear to be low :-\.
SoCal, will try to post a pic or two upon return. No rod brace ,Sal, lugs are for a kidney harness which we don't use much anymore for our style of fishing-when a big tuna decides to move up or down the the rail one needs to move with the fish RIGHT NOW. Many big fish have been lost because an angler was too " strapped in". We do put the rod forearm on the rail for added leverage, though. Keep in mind we are fishing from an anchored boat and have no ability to chase a big one, so lots of line is a must.
I see, thanks for the explanation.
Sal
Yeah the lugs have to be moved back due to the machining of the frame and different spool. As stated some use lower harnesses or use the lugs if they choose to use the reel for trolling. Many boats out here have rails, not rocket launchers or fixed places on the rail to troll at and a strap is attached to the reel while trolling. Unlike the Spirit Of Adventure which has solid rails, from the deck to top of the rail, and fixed locations to put your rod at for trolling.
Thanks Mark! I knew you would also know it, you're a walking encyclopedia when it comes to this stuff ;D
