Me and my family are heading to California in early march. Were going to be in the general San Diego area for 4 days 3 nights. My family wants to sea world one day and then I'm pretty much free for the other days. Does anybody have any advice on where I should fish and what kind of fishing there is. I'm kind of restricted to the beach and piers. Maybe I can swing an open party boat if I have the time. But I have gear from surf rods and spinners up to a 14/0 and everywhere in between so I have the gear covered
There are lots of West Coast Guys here to steer you in the right direction Chris. If you want to land a monster on that 14/0. Head South brother! ;) You can always fish for a White. They are there! ;D
Just kidding Chris, The Great Whites are protected. 8)
Well, I'm not sure where and what you'd be catching, but fishing from piers does not require a fishing license.
If your going to Sea World and staying in the area you will be right at Mission Bay. Plenty of fishing opportunities in and around the Bay but you will need a license to fish from shore as already stated. Also you will not be very far from the big three landings, H&M, Fishermans and Point Loma and just down a ways is Shelter Island where private boats launch and it has a rock wall protecting the launch area but with the MLPA's put in place I'm not sure of which areas are open for shore fishing.
All three landings have tackle shops and there is several other good tackle shops in the SD area that can give you advice on where to fish and what is working the best.
March is rather slow saltwater fishing wise here in So Cal. 15-20 lb test and a spinner or two with rods to match is all you will need unless you want try for mud-marlin (rays) where 40-50 lb test and a long rod to launch off the beach works best.
March is mostly rock fishing. Heavy sinkers on the bottom in about 300' of water for fish that are very tasty but don't put up a lot of fight, with the exception of the occasional big ling cod.
But in San Diego, its the home of three of the best landings/fleets in the world, there might be a chance at yellowtail. You'll have to keep an eye on their fish counts.

I've always had good luck on the F/V San Diego or anything out of Seaforth Landing....in March a 2/0 or Jigmaster with appropriate rod will be all you need....20 lb mono or 50 lb braid to drop 6 oz+ sinkers.....with the minor El Nino this year you never know.....for pier or rock fishing a 7-8 foot spinning outfit will be all you need to cast 1-2 oz sinkers and bait....keep an eye on http://www.sportfishingreport.com/ for local fish counts and that will give you a good idea of the tackle needed...
for me, fishing starts up again here in northern california with salmon in april. until then, nothing.
Im SoCal local. So if any ever need a fishing partner from SD to Half Moon, I'm always ready to wet a line!
Local reports for us land based guys.
Lots of general info on local piers etc.

Alan, aren't you up towards the bay? Right now I understand the stripers are biting well...
yeah, it's off an on, but striper fishing for me is just catch and release. fun to catch, but san francisco bay is pretty polluted. i know some guys eat the. i'd pass. :-\
