Hi guys,
Is anyone making their own drag washers from carbontex sheets? Not to take away from the very good product that Dawn sells, these sheets just make it more affordable and because I can actually buy them here in Aus there isn't a lot of postage to be concerned with. I can get the sheets at $20 with postage for a size roughly of a standard envelope, so I should do a handful of reels with each sheet.
Anyway i'm doing the first reel shortly, will let you guys know how it goes!
I only make washer when they are not available in the size and thickness. Frankly speaking, I would rather not cut them myself. The mess it makes...just not worth it in my book...but I have no choice for some of my kits.

Alan is right, however I do ALL my drag washers from sheets. It's more affordable that way, as I do A LOT of reels. The best way to go, is to get a nice set of punches and you will be fine. Otherwise I use the scissors and Dremel and dust goes everywhere. Also, I don't think the dust is good to breathe in. I wear a hospital grade mask if I'm dremeling the washers. I actually get my sheets from Dawn too.

There is a lot of savings when you cut your own drags. I do it a lot. I put a powerful fan behind me and go to town. ;D
I have sheet from .050 to .140 and quite a few in between. When doing them for Hex Gears and inserts, There is no other way. You can't buy those.
I have punches for the standard ones too. Just don't sand on them in an enclosed area.

So Daron, you're cutting hex gears out of CF sheets? Is this to lighten the reel?

Yep cost is a huge thing, the only downsides of living on a remote big island is that everything can kill you and postage/shipping costs a motza! But the fishing is great!! :D

When ordering washers from US, it's not just the cost of postage to AUS, there is also the two week or so lag time waiting for delivery. If there is no hurry and I am ordering parts from Dawn, Scott's B&T or others, I'll include any drag washers I know I will need.
If I only need the drag washers to finish a reel - I'll cut them from a few sheets I bought from Wallace (when he still had them).
When you are only making washers for one or two reels it doesn't make a lot of mess but is best outside with ventilation as others have mentioned - you can drill the inside hole with a normal twist bit and trim the outside diameter with scissors using a metal washer as a template then trim by hand on sandpaper or a file. And if it is not perfect it doesn't matter.

If you have many reels and not just a hundred or so as I do ;D, or service many reels, it might be a good idea to cut your own.
With the right tools there would be no dust to deal with.

Lets not get off track here. The Carbon Fiber Hex Washers are for a Hexagon main gear or insert that goes in the gear. Not a Carbon fiber gear. ;D
