Title: Penn 209 lw issue
Post by: TheReelGuy850 on January 23, 2015, 02:50:30 AM
After servicing  this reel for a buddy of mine who puts it through immortal hell during the snapper season here in florida ive came across a problem after assembly. The reel needed a new click tongue, pawl and idler gear.So got it all together and put'er in gear an gave it a turn and felt it sticking every rotation.Checked the worm gear guard and noticed it was bent out a bit then i straightened it and gave it another go..same sticking on every rotation of the spool... ???  Any suggestions???

Is it sticking right when the line guide is against one side ?? If the hiccup is when the line guide is out in the middle section, then you got a bad worm gear. Take the worm gear out and try eliminating things one by one. The 209's are easy, but can be very finicky at times.

Just a process of elimination --

Try the old worm gear -- but it sounds like you did not replace it with a new one?

Try it without the shield

This may sound weird -- but inspect the brass gear that the worm goes into, and interacts with the idler gear.  One time I had the same issue, and it ended up being one bit of a nylon idler gear tooth jammed in the brass gear.  Grease hid it well -- and even after cleaning, I needed a magnifying glass.

A few possibilities -- just got to work through the possibilities one at a time.

Fishing for Snapper with a 209 -- puts a lot of stress on the LW.

Good luck,

Fred

I had this issue on a 209. The pawl wasn't in correctly. Also, has the worm been cleaned? I clean mine and then reoil it, no grease. That fixed it for me.
