Title: Penn 150 Surfmaster
Post by: JoePlo on February 01, 2015, 09:22:34 PM
Spent the rainy Sunday working on an old Penn 150 Surfmaster. Only issue with the reel was a missing eccentric level. I attempted to cannibalize level from busted 209 but does not use the same screw.

(http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w284/Inspectojo/Reels/DSC_0700.jpg) (http://s179.photobucket.com/user/Inspectojo/media/Reels/DSC_0700.jpg.html)

(http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w284/Inspectojo/Reels/DSC_0703.jpg) (http://s179.photobucket.com/user/Inspectojo/media/Reels/DSC_0703.jpg.html)

Already disassembled. The intriguing part about the Surfmaster is its "Take apart construction."

The term "Take-Apart" refers to the feature of quick and easy take-down of the reel for cleaning or spool change. To effect this, unscrew the knurled take-apart screw ( part TA 200 ) three turns to the left and then pull it outward ( away from plate ), at the same time rotate the right side plate about 1/4 inch to the left ( counter-clockwise ) and pull it away from the reel frame, taking care not to drop the freed spool. To re-assemble, reverse the entire operation, making sure to screw the take-apart screw into the reel frame, as otherwise the right side plate might be lost.

Fully disassembled. Both side plates are brushed off and cleaned.

(http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w284/Inspectojo/Reels/DSC_0704.jpg) (http://s179.photobucket.com/user/Inspectojo/media/Reels/DSC_0704.jpg.html)

After cleaning. Will hit brass parts with blue grease.

(http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w284/Inspectojo/Reels/DSC_0707.jpg) (http://s179.photobucket.com/user/Inspectojo/media/Reels/DSC_0707.jpg.html)

Standard Penn bridge. Will clean off all grease. Careful with removing fiber washer as I have broken quite a few on older reels. This one was in good shape.

(http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w284/Inspectojo/Reels/DSC_0708.jpg) (http://s179.photobucket.com/user/Inspectojo/media/Reels/DSC_0708.jpg.html)

After cleaning. Drag contains 3 carbon fiber washers and 3 metal washers. Order was CF / Round metal / CF / Keyed metal / CF / Round metal. Used Cals Drag grease.

(http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w284/Inspectojo/Reels/DSC_0712.jpg) (http://s179.photobucket.com/user/Inspectojo/media/Reels/DSC_0712.jpg.html)

Began rebuilding handle side of the reel. Placed in eccentric and eccentric spring. I like to place in bridge screws and spring and then place small bit of blue grease to keep them in place.

(http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w284/Inspectojo/Reels/DSC_0714.jpg) (http://s179.photobucket.com/user/Inspectojo/media/Reels/DSC_0714.jpg.html)

I failed to take a picture putting in the bridge. The dog is held in by a flat metal spring type piece with 45 degree bend.

(http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w284/Inspectojo/Reels/DSC_0715.jpg) (http://s179.photobucket.com/user/Inspectojo/media/Reels/DSC_0715.jpg.html)

Like to brush on a light coat of blue grease.

(http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w284/Inspectojo/Reels/DSC_0716.jpg) (http://s179.photobucket.com/user/Inspectojo/media/Reels/DSC_0716.jpg.html)

Before placing the inner ring back together all posts and reel seat needs to be screwed back in.

(http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w284/Inspectojo/Reels/DSC_0722.jpg) (http://s179.photobucket.com/user/Inspectojo/media/Reels/DSC_0722.jpg.html)

To put back together simply align the ring. You will see the notches.

(http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w284/Inspectojo/Reels/DSC_0717.jpg) (http://s179.photobucket.com/user/Inspectojo/media/Reels/DSC_0717.jpg.html)

Really only goes on 1 way.

(http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w284/Inspectojo/Reels/DSC_0719.jpg) (http://s179.photobucket.com/user/Inspectojo/media/Reels/DSC_0719.jpg.html)

Spool was in good shape. Just brushed old grease off and placed blue grease on metal.

(http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w284/Inspectojo/Reels/DSC_0727.jpg) (http://s179.photobucket.com/user/Inspectojo/media/Reels/DSC_0727.jpg.html)

With opposite side plate back on, place spacing sleeve back on.

(http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w284/Inspectojo/Reels/DSC_0728.jpg) (http://s179.photobucket.com/user/Inspectojo/media/Reels/DSC_0728.jpg.html)

Install drag star and handle.

(http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w284/Inspectojo/Reels/DSC_0729.jpg) (http://s179.photobucket.com/user/Inspectojo/media/Reels/DSC_0729.jpg.html)

Good to go. Just need to order the eccentric and eccentric screw.

(http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w284/Inspectojo/Reels/DSC_0732.jpg) (http://s179.photobucket.com/user/Inspectojo/media/Reels/DSC_0732.jpg.html)

Definitely placed this in the wrong section. Sorry did not realize there was a subcategory for Surfmasters. I believe the thread can be moved?

Hi Joe,

And welcome to the Board.

Looks like you know what you are doing -- thank you for sharing!

Nice clean up and service on that old 150 -- they are very good reels.

If you still need the eccentric lever & hex eccentric lever attaching nut -- PM me your mailing address and full name.

I will get them in the mail to you -- no charge.

Numbers for your reel are 21-200 & 22-99.

Best,

Fred

Nice write up!  I may follow suit and start wearing gloves when I work on reels...the wifey doesn't enjoy the smell as much as me, ha!

A big thank you to Fred Oakes. The eccentric lever and nut came rapidly and I was able to put the reel back together this weekend. It is in amazing condition. Would almost say it has never been fished.

They are very similar to a jig master aren`t they. Sounds like the dog spring is different. Very nice job and beautiful reel.

Basically the same and you are right, the Surfmasters use a flat spring.

I know this thread is from a couple years ago, but the star is backwards... numbers go on the inside.

I'm a novice at this stuff... if the star is flat on both sides, what difference would it make which side is up (other than cosmetic)?   Reminds me of something else... when replacing the reel seat on a Penn, I wonder which way it is supposed to face, front to back... :P

The 113 and 114 size have butress threads , the 60 size doesn't though.

Buttress threads - had to google that one. Thanks.   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buttress_thread

The star direction is purely cosmetic. It functions the same backward and forward. I suppose like the stand, they had to put a number on one side, which makes the part have a directionality it didn't have when there was no part number.

The star is stamped out in a punch press and the sharper edge is on the inside where the part no. is and the more rounded edge is on the outside. Very little difference but there is a difference. Plus it looks nicer.        Rudy

There is a differance on the 113 and 114 size threads, look at a gearsleve with a magnifier.

Lee, I'm confused, I think, that's how confused I might be. The 113 uses the 10-66 star, the 114 uses the 10-114 star (also used on the 115). AFter thoughtful consideration, it seems what you are bringing up about the buttress threads means that there is a directionality on the 114 star even without the number stamped. I presume the number is stamped so that if it is on the inside (not visible) the threads are in the proper orientation so that the buttress threads may be engaged in the proper direction so as not to fail prematurely.

Thanks for this information. I thought screw threads were all the same before this post.
