Been checking out the s hematics on the new US-made 113hs. Looks like there have been alot of great changes to the design. I am wondering if any of these newer parts could work with the older 113 reels. Has anyone looked into this?
Namely I am wondering about?
1)Bridge
2)Star/clicker/bearing/tension springs on top if drag stack
3)Baja special style drag stack/gear
4(Spool
5)Free floating pinion assembly
What are the differences in the side plate dimensions/config that allowed for these design mods?
And would it be possible to incorporate any of these features in older 113 reels?
Has anyone got a new 113 who could explain the differences here, or post some pics of the guts side-by-side with older 113 parts?
From the best I can tell John. The bridges aren't compatible. I have been buying up a lot of 9/0 parts from the L2 Version. The spool and bridge are compatible and a few other parts. It gets kind of tricky.
I wish I had one of each of 3 complete reels in hand to play around with parts compatability. I like many of the newer design features, and wonder what the feasability of mods to older reels might be. Seems like a larger diameter hole in the older sideplate might allow for the use of the better star and top of drag stack components.
Not sure if the bridge could be modified to work, which would allow for the use of the baja gear set w/under gear bearing?
Is the floating spool compatability also linked to the newer bridge/right side plate?
Guess this stuff is new territory for me. I am likely missing a key (or several?) difference(s) that would prevent utilizing existing newer parts on older reels.
I don't see why :-\, some might say that this bridge is better

I agree Sal (*previously refered to as "Lee") like the SS and double dogs, but I like the Baja gear set, and under gear bearing. Looks like minor mods to the SS bridge might allow for the use of the stainless baja set w/undergear bearing?
Its me Sal, Lee didn't give his comment yet ;D.
That is one of the reason I like an Acetal for under the gear, Acetal/Delrin acts as a bearing. They are pretty much maintenance free.
Lol. My bad Sal.
I agree. I just think it might be great to be able to add the Baja gear set, w/under gear bearing, and the star, and top of gear bearing/spring washer assembly, and the free floating spool to the standard 113 reels. Not sure if Alan T's sleeves work with the baja gear set? And if Alan C's bridge would be compatable with the freefloating spool design. I know the hole in the side plate would have to be enlarged. Guess parts cost might make this a bit cost prohibitive as well.
You're going too fast John, a masterpiece take time to build ;D. I believe we're doing good, we already have a better bridge plate with a better dog system, we also have more drags.
I remember "The Boss" say when I joined here, the possibilities for the 113H upgrades are endless...he was right. ;D
Lee,
I think the end is near. ;)
The Tank has come a Looong Way!
I'm buying up a few frames. Rare ones, wide ones, and standard ones.
With the advent of Adam's inserts, the double dog bridge, and everything else. I actually think this will be the only Penn reel that we can no longer upgrade. ;D
No, I disagree! We have a few things we could still do ;) ;D. hold on to your wallet. ;)

I agree. There is definately more that could be done.
Alright,
What else is there? We have a ss double dog bridge on the way. With all the other upgrades we already have. SS double dogs, ss gears, yokes, 7stacks, Hex inserts, aluminum frames.
What am I missing?
I am ready to retire my 14/0. This thing weighs a ton! ;D
How about
Solid SS stands that don't twist or warp for 12 and 14/0s?
Or
Free-floating spools for penn conventionals?
Or
Truely isolated drag stack assemblies?
Higher toothed antireverse gears w/less handle backplay
The holy grail, in my humble opinion, would be to find a way to integrate the benefits of a lever drag reel with that of a star drag. A larger drag surface area acting directly on the spool, but capable of disengaging from gear. and ar dogs on the spool...
Guess I am thinking of a different reel design all together here...
like a lever drag w/o the lever and a 2 speed drive train.
The other thing would be super efficient, low heat, finely adjustable, ceramic magnetic driven braking systems on reels. Or low friction electro magnets in place of bearings?...now I'm just being silly.
Preach On Brother! Preach On! ;D
