I recently bought a 9/0 seller said it's made in usa. I paid 160 for a new 9/0 usa made I thought it was a good deal. But nowhere on the reel does it say usa. Box says usa but then again you could always exchange boxes. Sal, daron, all you senator experts please let me know what you think.
I see the "Made in Usa" clearly visable on the box, but this looks like a Chinese made reel to me. Eccentric lever & clicker recess on plates, head and tail plate markings, and rod clamp all say late model to me.
I was told that Penn is making the 9/0 in the USA again. I'm pretty sure this is that new model. Putting made in USA on a foreign made product is not only unethical, it is illegal.
http://www.pennfishingstore.com/penn-115l2-senator-l2-reel.html
The models with a 2 at the end of the model number are the current chinese made senators. Also note that the model above has a graphite half frame.
The ebay pictures weren't close ups and he only had 3 pictures 2 of the reel and 1 of the box. Title says usa made I even asked the seller he confirmed usa made. I am very disappointed, I just purchased accurate frame, ss gear sleeve;, ss dogs yoke, handle etc. Another 150 on the new rod. >:(
This looks like the exact sane model. Made in China.

Tightlines, I think your right the reels look exactly the same. I'm gonna have to contact the seller and ask for a refund. Now having said that what do you all think is a good price to pay for a 9/0 in excellent condition?
I got my pristine, made in the USA model for around $120 shipped, and it already had a SS gear sleeve installed
It should be worth all of $120. They are still good working reels, and are lighter weight then the older 115 series. Though many on the site have a strong opinion to the contrary, I know that reel can still catch fish. It is not machined to the same tollerances, and may be a bit more prone to corrosion. Don't get me wrong, I like the older reels better, but I have caught plenty of good fish on these reels stock as well.
they may have used chinese parts, like stainless steel rings, bridge plates, yokes, and eccentric jacks. personally, i wish penn would have done that long ago. even cheap stainless is better than chrome that peels off. :-\
Let's say the seller refuses to refund my money. Can I still add all the goodies to this reel accuframe ss gears etc. Or am I going to run into problems somewhere? Oh by the way guys iv been a member here for a while. I don't post much but I spend a lot of time on this site. I'd like to say hi to all of you My name is Mike. I know there's another section where newbies introduce themselves, but I'm not a newbie ;D
Welcome Mike! Theres no reason to be afraid of posting here, I'm pretty sure none of us bite. I think this reel model can take all the upgraded parts that are available here, and elsewhere. It also does have the extrwnally accessable drag stack. As I said, I wouldn't be afraid to fish it. Looks like its in good overall condition. If you do keep it, crack it open and give it a good prefishin service job.
it should be fine.
I would just roll with that reel Mike. I got some of those plates from Dom. I really like the look.
I am going to be honest.. I have been using some L2 parts in my older American Made 9/0's.
The spool and other parts will interchange with the older 9/0's. The biggest difference is the sleeve on the L2. It has a nut that goes on the sleeve. I tried an older 9/0 star on it and the threads are not exactly the same. The bridge will bolt right up to an older plate, I just swap the sleeve with stainless one anyway. The eccentric and all the screws and parts will work. Just swap the sleeve.
I built this one recently. It has been hot rodded to the hilt. Notice the plate. ;)

The addition of the SS rings makes keeping the reel worth it! To be honest I think the China made jigmasters are great and use parts from them all the time!
This one has an L2 Eccentric. It fits and was on the cheap, compliments of Big T. ;)

Let me put it this way Mike. I'll take that reel off your hands if you don't want it. I think those plates are kind of rare. I can trade you this reel with a ss sleeve and new 5 stack already in it. Its all USA except for the eccentric. Or I can just give you the $160 you have in it. I think this is a transition reel. It has both China and US parts.
Your reel doesn't have the same eccentric nut and the H2 models have that nut on top of the sleeve with a plastic cap on it. Your reel has neither. If you want to trade. I will have to keep my handle. Those are getting rare too! ::)
Personally, I would tank that baby out! ;D

The reel is made in the USA. The last large run of 115L Senator reels made in Philly used that style left and right side plate.
Last run made in USA RS plate to the right, China made 115L2 plate to the left. And as someone else stated the China made 115l2 have a 1/2 graphite frame. No made in USA 115L ever had a 1/2 graphite frame. The RS plate bearing hole is also a dead giveaway its made in USA

Sorry, you got incorrect info.
Sorry for taking a long time in responding. I feel asleep early last night and I just finished a 12 hr Shift. I want to thank all of you for sharing your thoughts. Daron give me a few days to think about your offer. I'm still undecided on what I'm going to do, I like the reel but I'm a little crazy I need to be 100% sure my reels are made in usa. All I use are old Penns and new avets . Does anyone know how I could contact penn maybe they know something we don't.
Dump the reel and get one that says Made in USA on the sideplate... It's the only way to be sure ...I have two Chinese Jigmasters I got cheap as a parts lot. Have fished with no probs, in fact they have some SS parts the old Made in USA don't have. But I hear you though, if I have a choice I'll go USA !
Cool
We are all a little crazy here Mike. ;)
If you decide to sell that reel to me. I will hot rod it, just like any of my older ones.
There is still some controversy if it is made in America or not. I just like the looks of it and would replace the sleeve with stainless. Black Pearl Gears and a ss Handle arm and fish it.
Maybe a frame too. ;D

I believe Philly Guy told you it was made in the USA. I also believe Philly Guy probably works for Penn (although I have no actual knowledge of this).
Alright. Philly Guy!
We need a little more reference before all here will believe what you say is Gospel. ;)
It really doesn't matter to me. I can make it a fishing Machine either way. ;D
This is only the second time I have seen those plates and I like them!
Solid evidence will make all Believers. :D
My picture a few posts up should sum it up. China made 115L2 has 5 side plate screws, USA made 8. 115L2 has the RS bearing enclosed, USA made has the bearing visible. 115L2 has a 1/2 graphite frame with the stand rolled on, USA made has all posts with a separate stand. The 115L2 has a different style knob then the made in USA barrel knob. Look at the diameter differences of the gear sleeve hole. :)
I believe the reel was assembled here, this was their last run. Good luck finding out if the parts were actually made here :-\
Yes, being proud of the manufacturing heritage in the US -- I would like to buy everything I use in life -- from only Domestic Manufacturers -- using American labor.
So sometimes this is possible -- but in the majority of cases, it is not realistic or even possible. We are only going to pay so much for a product -- and few of us are willing to do that.
The bigger questions to ask ourselves: is the quality as good, are parts available, are parts overly expensive?
I will not even go into the greed and corruption that the corporations are allowed to practice.
We live in a global manufacturing society and age.
A majority of the products we purchase are made in other countries -- clothes, shoes, electronics, TVs, tools, and so many more. As long as we are getting what we expect -- and can afford the items -- we generally do not worry about where it was manufactured.
For the last 20+ years -- all of the Dodge Cummins Diesel Ram trucks have been built in Mexico. Few purchasers were/are aware of that fact. The dealer never told them. So these consumers proudly drove their trucks for 300K to 400K miles -- only finding out later that they were made in Mexico -- but after spending $30K to $50k for the truck, then discovering the digit number "3" at the start of their VIN -- they may not have bragged as loud -- but they appreciated the truck's quality.
I too would rather have everything be made in America -- but I think that dog is buried out back somewhere -- and has been for more than awhile.
We can hang onto the past for as long as possible, or we can move ahead. Either way is OK. It is just up to the individual to make informed choices.
Best,
Fred
Well said Fred. ;)
I got the opportunity to try a couple of reels from the other side, I was impressed.
There is good and bad everyway, for the most part, you get what you pay for.
You can't expect a $20 reel to do great things, I've seen some $300 reels that give others a tough time competing.
There seems to be some controversy on this reel, I guess I'll never be 100 % sure where it was made. Some of you think it's china others think usa and have very good points. I have decided to keep this reel. Main reason is because I had already bought all the upgrades so I went ahead and installed them. Here are some pics
Very Nice Upgrades! :o
Good Job! ;D
Oops I forgot to mention something. When I was looking for answers to find out where it was made. I found something interesting in the schematics. It said that older reels didn't come with washer 8A and coller #9. They came with a different washer. Here's where I got all confused my reel has all the parts :-\ .
I'd like to thank all of you once again.
Now i came across a problem and need help. I removed 1 screw from the frame to grease everything up, but the other one won't budge it's stuck. I tried putting tape around it and twisting with pliers and nothing. Any suggestions
Be careful, they twist off easy.
Heat the stud and put penetrating oil on it, 50/50 ATF/Acetone or Kroil has worked well for me. Let it cool and repeat. After it cools again tighten it a tiny bit then put some oil on the end inside the frame. Then back it out a bit more than you went in and lube the threads on the outside and inside of the frame. Carefully repeat this until the stud starts coming out.
Good luck.
Check out this item I found on eBay: http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=121135361974&alt=web
Well I got it out unfortunately the thread messed up. I'm looking to get some studs do you all think these would work?
I have never held a 9/0 but I say that would be a 1/4-20 Stud or 10-24 Stud. Get a SS bolt from McMaster & Carr & cut the length you need.
Mike
Mike,
You haven't lived if you haven't held a 9/0. ;D
You want me to send you one? ;)
No thank You that would be something else to put in storage room. I was concerned about the Studs on the reel. I'm slowing down buying reels.

i I guess I can say I've lived now ... Yesterday I held my first 9/0 and bought it on the spot. Funny how it happened. The wife and I were going on a two day getaway so I checked craigslist in the area we were going to be and there it was ! It was a sign...anyway it is an experienced USA ball Bearing model. I'm looking forward to cracking her open...
Cool

I say that about the 10/0 and larger reels. Hold one in your hands, then disassemble it and check out the gears. You'll realize that you are in the realm of truly big game reels.
I would not be afraid to work on a 9/0 or bigger reel. I just don't have a use for any reel that large. I do have a 114HL with all the SS Goodies that will sit on a plinth until the Tuna come into Jamaica Bay on L.I. The biggest fish I chase are Striped Bass, Cod & Pollack.

Definitely George! Big Senators Rule!
They are perfect for the type of fishing I do. I love them! ;D

You're right, Mike. I probably don't have a use for anything larger than a 4/0 but I bought a 10/0 a while back. Daron and Sal made me do it! ;) At least I have the biggest reel in my neighborhood. ;D
I haven't found a use for anything bigger than a Newell 332 - 3/0 size. I have fished in 400' H2O & had no problems. I have 2 - 440's - 4/0 size that I never use.
Mike
I have a sentimental love for the (USA-made) 9/0 because I caught my personal best 125# YFT on a stock 9/0 off the kite aboard Royal Polaris twenty-some years ago. The reel performed flawlessly! Lately, the addition of Dom/Tom frames makes them so irresistible that I'll probably end up with three of them. ("You know you're a reel-head when...") ;) :D ;D

If most of us actually "needed" a use for each reel we own -- we likely would not need much storage.
Best,
Fred

A-yuh... nothing like that pesky distinction between "need" and "want". ::) ;)
