Title: Shimano Shim Washers - OEM / Non OEM sourcing.
Post by: Slazmo on February 27, 2015, 12:31:29 PM
Hi everyone.

Wanting to source some shim washerstthat most Shimano and Daiwa reels have on the drive gear on the LH side to provide better mesh between the drive and pinion gear.

Shimano Aus sell a pack of 4 OEM shim washers for $2.80 AUD.

Typically I need washers with ID 5mm to 7mm and OD of  7mm and 9mm and thicknesses of .01mm, .05mm, .09mm 1.2mm and above to 1.4mm.

Does anyone have a good supplier or punches them out themselves?

Looking for pointers or avenues to source cheaply enough than send money to Shimano Australia because they don't help at all...

Appreciate any replies.

Andrew (Australia)

Personally, I make shims myself. I have a drilling jig to clamp the shim sheets between, and drill the ID out then cut them off the sheet with snips, and do final shaping with a dremel, and a quick rub over a flat sheet of wet/dry to remove burrs. It's time consuming, but as you have found out, they are costly to buy.
I'm pretty certain that the guys from America can get shim kits from McMaster-Carr. Not sure on sizes in these kits, and thicknesses. Maybe they can help. They have a website you could browse through.
You could possibly try smallparts.com.au and see if they could put together a kit for you, but not sure how cost effective it will be.
It's a good question, and a common problem for those that go "one step further" for their clients.
I hope someone from Aus can give you a better answer.

I'm trying out stainless steel shims used for remote control cars made by 3Racing.  You can find them at your local RC shop or eBay.  They have different IDs and come in a pack of different thicknesses.

Some of the Daiwa ones are cheaper though...but trying to locate the shim part numbers are hard.

Search for RCMART in hkg, they have shims for rc cars, only size they don't have is 7mm which I am still looking for.

Thanks all.

Looks like the last 3 hours of searching every key word possible in relation to Shim Washers came up in dead ends...

Nowhere in the world makes as standard 7mm ID, 10mm OD and .01mm Thick shim washers...

Looks like Shimano has a monopoly on this part!
