Title: Comments on gear sleeves for 113h.
Post by: STRIPER LOU on March 01, 2015, 05:50:44 PM
Hi all, A while back I picked up a half dozen penn 113h's for a very good price! I new they were going to need some work but  were dirt cheap. For me, on the east coast, this is one of the best reels for wire
line. Although some of my own personal reels are quite old I have never replaced a gear sleeve because of wear!
Unfortunately some of these sleeves on these reels are worn.
I'm aware that Alan's SS sleeve is the best absolute but with 6 reels and on a budget I was considering some I saw from a Cal guy on ebay.  He had Pro Gear replacements for the 113h, sleeve with bridge, made in USA, 5 pcs for $60. shipped. That's the bridge and sleeve assembly.
Would you be so kind as to give me your thoughts on these?
Thanks in advance,  ..  Lou

Hi Lou,

The bridge plate and gear sleeves are made by Randy Kuo, the maker of ProGear reels.  They are perfectly fine but know that if you want to replace gear sleeves in the future with those bridge plates and sleeves, you cannot just fit penn sleeves without shaving the securement pin because the holes are in a slightly different height.

Those are made nicely, but unfortunately they won't work with the stock sleeve from Penn. This might be why he's trying to get rid of them. You could make them work if you wanted to, but they will need filing and maybe drilling.
Those to me are not stronger than Penn, but they do have a nice riveted post. Still, I'm not sure if that means anything, as for strength.

...sorry, typing at the same time.

Thanks for the comments!
So do you think for 5 bucks more apiece and a bit for shipping, the penn parts are the way to go?

I guess the reason I considered these in the first place was the price, and secondly I had never a worn a sleeve out on my own reels.
For 5 pcs its a savings of  $25 bucks. Not a big deal, but, ya know that SS check dosent leave you much to play with!!!!!!!  Almost forgot ......  I think we got a 1 1/2 % raise!!!!!
Glad I bought all my toys before I retired!!!!
As always gentlemen I appreciate your help.

Lou, if you're definitely  not going with the ss upgrade, stick with the cheaper ones, those are of a good quality.
