Title: Penn Monofil 27 Mini-TANK
Post by: pompano joe on March 03, 2015, 02:40:54 AM
Here's another Mini-TANK from my shop...Penn Monofil 27 with a complete Carl Newell kit.  Kit includes bars, stand, rod clamp, spool and bearings.  Other features include a stock steel gear and stainless pinion (3:1), rain  SS gear sleeve and A/R dog, 3-pos Penn power handle, EVA power knob and 3+1 Carbontex drag.

As always, thanks to the Alan Tani team for information and inspiration and local parts czar and friend Keith Rawson.

Fantastic job, Joe!

Sure shows what you can do with those little Penns.

That should be a pleasure to fish -- well thought out.

What rod would you pair that with?

Best,

Fred

With the low gear ratio I'd probably use this for drifting the Pensacola Pass.  I've got an old Abu Garcia "Work Horse" E-glass rod that should be about right.  I magged a similar 180 Baymaster build to surf fish, but at 3:1 I'm still reeling it back in!

Excellent work on the 27 - love the handle - you should be able to crank them in with ease .

Wondering how much drag you can get from the monofil?  Also, will this cast 12# without going in between the spool and frame?

Thanks,

Ed

I fish 15 lb Izorline XXX mono which has a thinner diameter than most non IGFA rated lines on my 27 which has also has a Newell spool without any line eating problems. I can't even slip a piece of paper between the side ring and Newell spool. My reel came with the after market spool so I have no idea what the gap is like with a stock spool.

Edit: I get about 8-9 lbs of usable drag with with the 3+1 Carbontex drags on my reel.
