Was wondering because my 500 with the red/maroon side plate came with steel gears, metal spool, not sure when it was manufactured , I end up using those gears in another 500. And why did Penn decided to go back to brass gears, cost?

i have a maroon plate 500, mine was given to me with a plastic spool (now aluminum spool) had a steel main gear. it has a few spots where the finish has come off and there is exposed steel, but it is not rusted and the drag works fine. drag would probably be a little smoother it if were not pitted

bottom of gear is worse

inside only has a small pit
