I've done some searches and get conflicting answers. How do you tell the age of a reel? I just got a reel yesterday for $30 and I don't think it's anything special, but would just like to know if it's 5 years old or 20 years old.

Possibly answered my own question. The base or seat has 30-113 on it. Scott's has that part listed for '96 models.
Your reel is a lot older than 1996. More like 1960's .
That would be kinda cool. Too bad I just ordered drag washers, dog, dog springs, and spacer washers for a '96 113 this afternoon.

Keep in mind that guys like me end up with a bunch of parts, and every so often put together enough to make a reel, so its a mismash of parts that are pretty much interchangable
I gave $30 for the reel. I took it apart and shot the dog spring arcross the room. For all I know it's still in orbit somewhere. Tomorrow I should get the new spring and washers in. This will be my second reel. My other is a 6/0. What is a decent yet affordable rod to pair it with. I'm thinking along the lines of smaller sharks, reds and inlet drop fishing.
I got all my parts in today and all is well. One question though. The drag washer kit had the same number of washers but the ht100 are thinner so I first placed the key, ht, ear, ht, key, ht and then added one of the old keyed washers to make the stack come flush to the top of the gear. Without the keyed washer the stack was below the gear and the spacer for the drag put pressure on just the inner rim of the top ht washer. Do I need to do something different? There is till room to wiggle the whole assembly when the four screws are put in before the drag star is tightened. That's the order they came out. First time opening a reel all the way. That makes sence to me to not have metal on metal. If I do that I think there is enough room to add another ht100 even with the extra keyed washer I already added. That would be 4 ht washers and 4 metal washers with little to no contact with the side plate with the drag loose. It would be one washers thickness above the gear. Was I supposed to get parts 140 & 136? Any thoughts?

Hi, you must start with a CF first. The order is CF-keyed-CF-eared-CF-keyed. If you use 6-60 CF washers you can build a 5 stack for a little more drag. You will also have to get one more keyed & one more eared washer. Drag stacks must be odd numbers. RUDY
Should the stack be recessed below the rim of the gear?
Only the last eared washer must be in the grooves of the gear, The last CF & keyed washer can be above the gear.
If you need more height for the stack you can add one or more keyed metal washers to the top of the stack for spacers.
