Cool!
That looks really convenient, Marc --
What would one need for a set up like you have?
What components? Where to obtain them?
Where is a source of supply for the powder coat?
How hard is it to do?
Does it turn out as well as a commercial job, or better?
Does the paint hold up well?
I have sent items out for PCing before -- but it is always a trip, expense, having to return, maybe losing small parts, etc..
Best,
Fred
Cool looking setup. What is the total investment costs? & rough estimate of cost per reel and/or part?
Sounds like a lot of people want their own setup now!
Nice job!

Some of the stuff you may already have
Toaster oven(walmart/target)
Small compressor(I have a 3 gallon) set to 25/30psi
Powder coating system Chicago( bought it at harbor freight) $70 works really good
Coating boot, I made mine out of a home depot bucket
Little 4 gallon shop-vac, connected to the base of the coating boot with a filter(I used a face dust air filter)
Powder coat paint( harbor freight) $5.00 for 16oz but not to many color, ebay lots of color but double/triple the price. There's also Eastwood but never dealt with them
High temp masking tape, silicone plugs
That's about what you need. The process of powder coating is fairly easy but parts needs to be clean and roughed up especially when dealing with chrome plating parts you have to make those parts look dull. When coating I like 2 light coats, if the part as sharp edge 3
Hard to tell from the pic but the result is/ looks very professional, will try to take better pics later. The nice thing about powder coating, it's very resistant and easy to fix if something happens, can't say the same for chrome and anodizing
Marc..
Marc..
Oh!! don't use your oven where you cook your food, you''ll get sick
And wear a mask even if your boot is equipped with an air filter

Noce looking results. I wonder if Tiburon would be willing to sell unfinished/raw frames and spools?

If not Tiburon, maybe someone else. I have seen some interest on new frames for penn reels, powder coating uncoated parts/frame would be a piece of cake , it's the prep that's the more time consuming
Marc..
That kit works pretty good apparently, especially on small parts. And no compressor needed

That is a very nice jigmaster! I really like that matte coloring.
Very nice Marc, I like the matte finish as well. That reel will look even sharper with black plates on.
Good job!

Can you have a glossy finish, too?
Quote from: George4741 on March 11, 2015, 12:39:54 AM
Can you have a glossy finish, too?
Yes you can, but the problem with glossy finish with powder coating is orange peel, some pigment are more prone to it, on mat finish you don't see it. I had a hard time with the color red, after many attempts, I found a somewhat solution, bake it, shoot it, bake it, but often it's cause by heavy coats
I have a bridge that is glossy, I'll take pictures when it's light out
Thanks guys
Marc..
Very nice work Marc.
Yes, I can hear my wife now...what do you need that for? How many parts will you powder coat...lalalalalala.
Thanks Bryan
It makes nice looking parts too

Beautiful reel! Really makes it look like a much more modern reel and definitely a one of a kind!
if you think about it, you wouldnt restore your '67 Chevelle SS 396 without a new coat of orange block paint....why not pimp the bridge....
very nicely done...the stealth fighter of Jigmonsters

I'm still partial to napalm....with a piquant undertone of Agent Orange and rotting vegetation.
Nice job(s) on the PC.

Thanks, Marc..
I was in the garage looking around this weekend and asked the wife....."so, which one of those two toaster ovens we dont use is the crappiest....just saying....."
and yet again behind the curveball.....i just got a line on SS screws from Aiala and Daron to pimp my ride and here we go color coded.... Wife is not gonna be happy with rod thread bill to match all this reel art. But I am from Ruff n Tuff generation....jeans had a color coded tag thing to your shirt so you presumably wouldnt walk out mismatched like an idiot....I think this was garanimals later....forgive my soapbox but you wouldnt put red diamond tuck in your orange Challenger would you?
Man that looks great! Saw your post on scsurffishing as well! Love the matte black look!

Me ether, the only color I can stand is silver, goes well with chrome and whatever colored reel. I was supposed to powder coat the space bar and foot that came with the reel but saw this nice Tiburon frame in glossy black, I thought it would match well with the flat black of the rings and the rest
I wonder how it would look in flat red and shiny red?
I want a 140 black to do the same
Thanks, Marc..
Oooh, ooh. Me need some! I was cruisin the net and found plastic powder coat that you can use on the end plates. Here they are... .

I actually have some rings, free spool lever and a crank getting rainbow chromed over in Phoenix. Crazy gas on water looking chrome for 60 bucks. I also want to de-anodize (simple green 2 days) some Newell SP-6 bars and buff 'em out to look like the new satin stainless pieces out there.
I dig the orange screws. Maybe some orange finger nail polish in the Tiburon etching on front for a little color balance. A rag with acetone fixes sloppage.
I like and use a many of those 3 hole Penn cranks. Did you remove the handle from the crank or did you cook it when you fired the paint? If you removed it..how did you do it and get it back on?
Marc. I have some stuff need you to power coat for me ;D

That's an Alan T SS crank arm, the knob from a Squall and hardware from another power handle
Marc..
Dont tempt me Marc. I have a few things I would love to get done in the matte black

What kind of parts?
Marc..
I've done powder coated jig heads by the hot dip method. I had to hang them up without the color part touching anything. So....
How do you electrostatically charge a small screw or other small part?

For screws I use a metal strip with holes in it that's the same length of the tray that comes with the toaster oven, for small parts with at least a hole I use a metal hook
