Hi All, Greetings from Kilwa, Tanzania! I found this site while trying to repair a 560L's drag. We are pretty remote and don't have any access to spare parts, things like Cal's grease etc. I need to keep reels going until I get (not very often) to civilisation and tackle shops. While we mostly use Shimano TLD's and Stellas out here, I do have a couple of light tackle Penn outfits - which are great fun on small Yellowfin Tuna, Kawakawa and small GT's. The Penn tackle is definitely on the light side, but lots of fun. Anyway I appear to have worn the 560L drag out. It will not tighten much past a pretty light setting before the spool itself turns with the drag knob. I followed a great tutorial by Dave (I think) which helped me strip the front drag assembly. I cannot see any obvious sign of wear on the drag washer itself. Does anyone have a suggestion on a temporary fix so I can keep going for now?
Many thanks for a great and informative site - I will be bugging the guys on the Shimano board a lot as well.
Best
Jonathan
Jonathan,
I don't have any suggestions for your drag, but I would like to see photos of Tanzania and the fish that you catch out there. I hope that you get an answer for your issue.
Regards,
Danny
Have not worked on the Penn 560L's but have worked on Okuma Coronando CD65 and CD90.
Have you confirmed that the Live Liner is disengaging properly so the main drag can re-engage?
From the one schematic I can find on Mike's Reel Repair there's only three drag washers: two in the spool, one in the back--not a whole lot to go bad.
You said you had a "couple" of the Penn's; if both are 560L's and the other is still functional take the covers off and see what's moving different.

Welcome aboard. I 2nd the picture request. And, unfortunately, only have a mess of Conventionals and a few small Spinners for light bait/plastics..

I agree with Porthos on this one. It sounds like its in liveliner mode. Take off the spool and drag knob and see if the shaft turns. The liveliner drag is very light. It's meant to control a live bait. I would look at the liveliner dog and the rear drag ratchet to start. Here is a tutorial on the 760l which should get you through it. http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=3205.0 Good luck!
