Title: Finding an alternative to ''not available''
Post by: gstours on March 18, 2015, 04:26:33 AM
This is another of my winter projects.  it started as a Tiagra 30II reel that was sold as parts missing. There was some minor corrosion on the frame and the bearings were fairly tight.  So I took it apart slowly and everything seemed ok with a little tlc.  As per the tutorials on this site I felt confident in proceeding with the restoration. It seemed like a "wide'' version of my Tiagra 20II, of which I dearly love......!!!
So It didn,t have a ratcheting drag lever and the sideplate that the quadrant

moves with or in was missing as well.  Some other parts needed serious cleaning as this reel was neglected or abused like a rich mans child.

Some of the parts I needed were repeatedly stated as not available. to shimano usa, and several other shimano specializers. So this is the rest of the story.   Below is the parts needed and how I made them.
(http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p660/gst6814/010_zps04ihpwrl.jpg) (http://s1344.photobucket.com/user/gst6814/media/010_zps04ihpwrl.jpg.html)
The sideplate piece to control the drag lever was fabricated from a piece of .o4o stainless steel sheet and was a direct copy of the tiagra 20II and it was used as a template. The spring was in my reel parts junk jar and ratcheting pin was made from a piece of sst rod. And the Drag lever was purchased for more than 40$.....The remaining tiny cover plate to hold the spring, pin into the Lever was made as well out of a thin piece of sst sheet.  So I seemed good to go!  I tried it and after a few adjustments I was happy.
I now had a ratcheting drag lever that worked just like I wanted for a fraction of the cost of replacement parts.
Was this work worth it?  Thats a 5700$ question. I did it and it works.  I learned a lot. Yes if you can buy the parts you need do it.   Thats what moneys for.     But if you run into a snag or are handy with your hands maybe you can cheat the hangman!

The Reel was tested and is ready for the next trip outside to fish with the guys!

This Is my new ''sleeper'' reel,  Usually on party boats there are a few stuffy people that know it all!  This reel was painted to have a 'calming' effect on the whole boat.  Its a nurd dummy reel......certainly not high end.  I think it can catch its share and not fail me......Lets See!!!

Great Job Gary! You are a true Craftsmen that can overcome any obstacle. ;)
I like the Grey Paint Job. Reminds me of a Navy Ship.

Where he lives you have to do that or wait for a plane and spend big bucks.

Yeah, being isolated in Alaska breeds those qualities in people. Admiration and respect for Gary, and others that survive and thrive up there.
The paint job gives that reel an almost "Kovalovsky" look about it. Very well done.

As mentioned earlier here is my other "Sleeper" reel,  Its a nearly new Makaira 20II as was, ah, very bright gold anodizing much like the penn vrx series.  So I "detuned" it so it wouldn,t raise eyebrows of the stuffy set!!!!!  As you can see it looks like a piece of junk!  This reel does everything well.........and fools just about everyone!!!!!!   I need a camouflage painted reel as well,  but need some pointers on how to spray it.  I guess tape on stencils???? I like the Avet ones, but not the high speed gears!   so i dunno!     gst.

Excellent work on that reel Gary - Im currently working on a Squidder head plate that's swollen out that much it wont even go into the housing and lock - Done heaps of search's online and most seem to say TRASH it and get a new one etc - Ive just sussed out a way to do it and will be posting pics shortly .

Rgds

Yes, usually if there is a will there is a way.  thats what the lil billy goat said!  wonder what was on his mind?   And usually its easier to buy bread than to make it!    gst.
