Title: Penn 1/0
Post by: callelk on November 29, 2010, 01:11:12 AM
I was just rereading the great tutorial on the Penn 2/0 and I have a quick question, will the same drag modification work on the 1/0?

I would think it would and I am looking to hotrod my 1/0 for steelies.

I have to ask: Do you really need more drag when fishing for steelhead??

I'm not sure what kind of Steelie fishing Callelk will be doing, but I did a lot of trolling for salmon/steelhead on Lake Michigan in the early to mid nineties and we used penn 3/0's on the downriggers and Daiwa accudepths for the line counter function on the dipsy diver rods.  I used to fish out of Pentwater MI with my stepfather when me and bro would go visit my mom up there for the summers.  The salmon and lake trout got up to 30 lbs, and the steelies up to 15 lbs or so.  I wouldn't use a penn 1/0 for that type of fishing unless you like reeling in an awful lot of line every time. Good Luck to ya!

Hi, sorry for the late response but my job requires that I travel extensively and I just returned from a 5 day

The short answer is no but like everything else I have; this reel is capable and will be required to perform multiple duties.  That is to say it may be used in the bay for small sharks, Rio Vista for stripers and small sturgeon, Snake River for Steelie's and the Salmon for, well, Salmon.  So the question then becomes, why not set it up to its full potential?

I would agree.  Even with light drag settings, the greased HT-100s make a world of difference.

Alan

Before I order parts for my 1/0, 2 question's will the SS shaft that you use to hot Rod the 2/0 work in my 1/0?, also do you know where I can get a solid frame for a 1/0?.

Regards

Joel

Hey Joel,

Not to hijack Alan's direct response.....but I just ordered and received my SS 98-60AT gear sleeves from Pennparts. They fit the 309, 1/0, 2/0, 3/0 and some 4/0's but not all models. May fit a few more. Jigmaster 500/501 is a different part.

MizMo rocks! She's the gal whom I spoke with and fills the orders. I got free shipping with my order of over $250 in parts. Yeah, I'll be hotrodding my 2/0 with the SS gear sleeve and drag goodies plus a few Jigamasters, 209's, 309's, etc. I went nuts :o on the Penn power handles and bought a bunch.

RE: the one piece frame? Check Tiburon - they may can hook you up. Or Hi's as was recommended. Others may chime in with THE answer. Expect to spend + - $90 for a frame....unless you get lucky and if you do let ME know.

good luck
