Title: Defiance LW pawl in a Penn 320GT
Post by: Haifisch on March 30, 2015, 07:06:53 PM
I have a guy that uses a lot of 320s on some charters he goes on with friends, anyway... I was working on one and noticed it had an odd pawl in it, and the worm was damaged on both ends, but was working fine when I was playing with the reel before teardown.  Anyone looked into this "mod" or was this fluke?  I did measure the two, it appears the Defiance pawl (47-DFN20LW) is a few thousandths deeper than the original and shaped more like the Abu pawl then the OEM pawl (which is what I thought it was originally). He said they put the pawl from the Defiance in it after the LW failed on the 320.  The reverse dog on the Defiance had failed prompting the swap.

not sure about the different pawls, but i always shim the 320/330 pawls using a dot punched out of teflon that is 0.010" thick.  i use a leather hole puncher and a teflon sheet purchased from mcmaster carr.  i can send you some if you want.

without the shim, the pawl tends to jump the track of the worm and cause all kinds of problems.

I have fixed a lot of 320/330 levelwinds recently, I have not heard of the .010 shimming method.  I was surprised when I pulled the Defiance pawl out of that reel.  I measured the two, the OEM 320 is .335" base of fork to bottom, the Defiance is .355", the pawls are within .003" diameter of each other, the 320 pawl being bigger. I am tempted to send a couple known reels out like that to see the long term result. Got to find my leather punch and order a sheet of teflon.
