got this brand new and on my second trip this happen

That is normal.  The ramp us there to sllow the pinion to disengage from the spool when shifting out of gear.  You will notice the pinion gear has ramps that match up.  Old, heavily used reels can show damage and/or narring here, which may need attention to ensure smooth pinion-spool interactions.
