yes you should lube them. Generally the concept is *protection first* then other considerations. There is nothing wrong with those bearings obviously, but you should protect them with an oil of your choice or grease if you want max protection.

I like Squidders.  They are great and fun little reels.

Almost sounds like clicker metal making that sound.  A bind would reflect in the amount of freespool spin time and you have some serious freespool spin time there.  Take a look at the Penn bearing shields in the cups.  See if one isn't sitting flat as it should within the bearing cup.  May be tagging the the clicker gear on the shaft.

Some of the guys here just take the Penn bearing shields out and toss 'em.  Personally I take the factory shields off the bearing itself and dry lube them then re-install, shield-less using the Penn supplied shield that drop into the cup on top of the bearing.  I also use lighter spools than the factory bronze/chrome Penn spools and I don't get near your spin time...but... It is about the ease which the spool starts to spin as the cast begins that equates into distance.  Quite often, just the inherent difficulty of getting a heavy spool to begin to spin causes instant birds nest.

To each his own and good luck,

Hoyt

Alan shows a pry-off method on his Squidder tutorial.  He also says how easy it to turn them into junk doing this.

He even shows a little tool he made to get under the shield and pop it out...........

"to remove a metal shield that is pressed into the bearing, you need another specialized tool.  this is an old screwdriver that i've ground to a nice long point.  drive the point in between the shield and the inner race, the pry up the shield.  it will be mangled at this point and will have to be discarded.  this takes a light touch.  drive the point in to far and you will mangle the cage and ruin the bearings.  i tried using the point of a small swiss army knife for a bunch of small boca bearings and ruined the entire lot, about $100's worth.  be careful!"

Yup, you're right, the shields come right off

They're only 1/16 wide, I didn't think they would. Using a hook, they come right off
I thought Alan was showing different bearings. He's always one up on us, that's why he's the boss ;D.

On larger bearings, you might want to give these a shot. No hammer, just a little pressure

Those should be safer to use.

Yup i used a hook and i got pinched couple of times but was worth it now am just waiting on the other parts to arrive to test my distance.
I was impressed i got more freespool than my avet with sealed bearing.

The bearings I'm showing above feel much better than most...don't ask me why, I don't know.

Hey yooo guys!  I like the hook method and it worked for me as well.  Thanks for bustin open your squidder to show me how.  I didn't feel like grinding a screw driver but the hook worked perfect.  Now my cast timing needs some practice.  I am going out this coming Teusday for Cali Yellowtail and that's my first go-to rig.

As long as you are monitoring this string...what are the McMasters numbers on stainless flat head screws for a jigmaster handle side ring for the posts?  Or remind me of where the tank lesson where you shared that information.  I can't find it.

WOTHoyt, I believe these are it:

If you're using a Tiburon frame, I would get 1/2" in length, i you're not, you might still need to file down the 1/4" screw a little, but you could probably get away as is.

Bestout, if it gets out of hand, try these ;D :

That's awesome!  Thanks for the legwork.

I am using a used Newell graphite seat/clamp and like to use longish screws to keep things square and tight.  I'll be able to find them from the page you pasted for me.  The Newell graphite seat/clamps are lower on the pole than the aluminum versions.  They help me a lot because I got me sum stubby, sausage lookin, nubbinses for fingers and it just makes life easier.  Besides level winds are for kids and women.

Sal, aluminum is non magnetic, but is does interact with magnets. I wonder if the spinning spool has what they call the Lenz Effect or if the magnets are slowing down the clicker gear ? I like it and may have to try this on one of my jigmasters  ;D
