Title: Two piece custom 114H
Post by: Alto Mare on April 18, 2015, 11:23:07 AM
I finally gathered all needed parts for this two piece frame. As mentioned earlier, this reel was sent to me from Reel Speed ( Aaron ), thanks again Aaron.
He found this frame in a box at his shop and thought that I would appreciate it the most...he was right ;D.
Here are the parts that I will be using
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/007_9.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/pescatore1/media/007_9.jpg.html)
and the assembly
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/008_13.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/pescatore1/media/008_13.jpg.html)
a Delrin washer of course
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/010_9.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/pescatore1/media/010_9.jpg.html)
some like to cut that Delrin washer even with the ratchet, don't do it, the dog will get stuck, 1/8 wider would be the best
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/020_6.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/pescatore1/media/020_6.jpg.html)
here is a shot of Adam's ss insert kit, Black Pearl's ss gears and Alan's ss gear sleeve
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/013_13.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/pescatore1/media/013_13.jpg.html)
the one piece left side plate and frame, as mentioned above
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/015_8.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/pescatore1/media/015_8.jpg.html)
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/017_4.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/pescatore1/media/017_4.jpg.html)+
assembly of the right side plate
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/018_4.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/pescatore1/media/018_4.jpg.html)
this frame is machined so perfectly that the tolerance is really tight, I had to shave the insert to make it work
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/024_3.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/pescatore1/media/024_3.jpg.html)
after lots of testing, all went in nicely
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/029_1.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/pescatore1/media/029_1.jpg.html)
a little grease on both sides of the spool and in it goes
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/031_1.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/pescatore1/media/031_1.jpg.html)

and here is the reel fully assembled , the handle is from Adam and the knob from Black Pearl
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/033_1.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/pescatore1/media/033_1.jpg.html)
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/034_1.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/pescatore1/media/034_1.jpg.html)
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/039_1.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/pescatore1/media/039_1.jpg.html)

From previous tests with the gears and inserts, this reel will generate over 70 lbs of drag. I know that the reel could handle it, the question is: could you? ;D. Realistically though, we have come up with a nice 35Lbs reel, this reel will feel silky smooth at those numbers.
One of the members suggested calling this reel "The Huber Tank", I believe it is appropriate ;D.
This is the only two piece 114H that I know of.
Enjoy it!

Sal

I think this is the only gold one.  The rest were black.  It's the same frame assembly that I showed you years ago and you told me that you wished it had the harness lugs.

Lawd have mercy! At 70 lbs of drag I'd be yanked over the side and heading for the bottom at full speed...  :P

But with a reel that beautiful, at least I'd look good doing it.   ;D

This one gave me a tough time, I had to fine tune many parts to make it work and I still feel a little bump every half turn of the handle, it is very light, but still bothering me ;D.
The clicker needed to be reduced in thickness, the clicker spring needed to be drilled and bent, the spool didn't sit centered, so I had to take it back down and press the right side bearing in, not easy, but my press did a good job.
The pins on the right side plate were designed for the later model 114HL, I wasn't able to drill the bridge perfectly, so I pulled them off, also not easy.
The inserts where too tall, after testing I realized that the gear wall was also a little tall, so I shaved both.
The machined area for the dog and spring was a little shallower than stock plates, so Lee's dog and custom spring needed to be sanded.
This would have been easier if I already did one, it takes time when you keep getting surprises and need to take the reel back down.
With that said, this is a nice reel.

Great final product there.  I'm sure it was worth sll of the extra effort.  They don't call it 'custom' for nothin.

I guess you thought it better to press the right bearing in place then ream the bearing pocket.  Might need a bearing puller to remove it when/if the time ever comes?

Bridge compatability can be a problem on some of the 14/0s as well.  I think the chromed ones with the stepped lip were built to tighter tollerances, and the newer or different bridge types don't quite line up right with the pins.  Removing the pins must have been difficult.  I wonder if this resulted in moving the bridge assembly just slightly down (in gear sleeve direction) from the original design specs.  Might help to explain minor bump every 180 deg of handle movement.  Does it still do it when cranking with the drag applied and spool held stationary?

Also, did you use a spacing sleeve?  Didn't see ine in the picture of parts

Worth every second spent on it. That reel is one to be proud of! That handle you get from Alan C. is a beaut, I have to see if he has any more.

Keep up the solid work and glad to see that one of a kind reel fell into the right hands.

Thanks guys!
John, nothing gets by you and that's a good thing ;D. Yes, I did use the spacer.
About the bearing, I personally would never ream the pocket, those should be pressed in. When the time comes for replacement, I have tools that can get the job done, the tools are from the same person that sent me that reel.
Removing the pins wasn't easy, but when I used nipper cutters with a little side to side movement, they came right out.
Good question on the bump, first thing I did was to increase the drag all the way and see if it was still there, at full drag its almost gone.
This is telling me the lip on the gear is still touching a little, it would probably go away as things get settled in, but I think I will open it again.
Not now though, I've seen the inner side of that reel too many times today. ;D

All that you need right now is a couple of big AJs for a good workout and all the bumps go away. ;D

I found the problem with the tiny bump when turning the handle. The main gear slipped out of my hand as I was sanding it down, but it hit my shoe first and then the concrete floor. I looked at it and all looked good at that time, I just placed it under a magnifying glass and noticed one of the tooth got squished a little at the very tip. The pic isn't clear but you should be able to see it
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/003_23.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/pescatore1/media/003_23.jpg.html)
I tried filing it down gently, to reshape it, but I still feel something.
I will replace that gear...too bad.
I will now get a piece of carpet and place it at my work area.

Here is the layout of the drag washers in case you wanted to do the same:  Delrin under the gear, 6 Carbon Fiber and one more Delrin washer right under the thick keyed washer on top.
Still have room to spare, but this feels nice

here is a shot of how it looks like when the washers are in place, the second Delrin washer from the top helps with turning the star with one finger when at max

Besides the small adjustment here and there, the two piece frame went together better than any custom frames I've ever worked on, even better than Accurate. The kit is machined to perfection and bring me to this question:
Tom, did you have anything to do with this frame?

Sal, Amazing job as usual.  I was wondering if Bryan or Aaron know who manufactured these frames or anyone else?
Also, do you think your gold one of a kind was difficult to put together because it was possibly a prototype to the black ones Bryan mentioned? Meaning the tolerances weren't worked out just yet?
I think it's really cool how well you showcase all of our members talent in your reels.  That makes them even more special.
Beauty of a reel and job well done.

Thanks Dom!
It is normal having to do minor adjustment, when putting together a reel with custom parts made from different sources.
I didn't want to knock Tiburon or Accurate, they been putting out some quality product. On this particular frame, I haven't noticed any misalignment anywhere, I check them really close. Not that it would matter, I just wanted to mention that I was impressed with the machining, reminded me of Tom's custom reel ;D.
One thing I wasn't crazy about, the way the bolts hold the seat. I will change those when I get a chance, i'm thinking something as these in ss:  http://images2.mcmaster.com/mva/Contents/gfx/large/92670a826p1-b01l.png?ver=1395224586

Not that I know of, but I've been thinking about it for Newells because I may need to make a frame as well to match the side plate design.
