I usually fish east of the Leanardo Naval Pier Far enough that the Navy boys don't get nervous.

Joe shortly after 9/11 I was cruising by a navy ship moored near AT&T Park when a navy tender with a big machine gun aimed at my came from the dock and made sure I gave the navy ship a wide berth.  I know what you mean about the Navy boys getting nervous.  Dominick

I fished on the Leanardo Navy Pier for many years with a friend who worked at Earl Weapons Naval Base in Colts Neck, which is all connected to that pier. I also worked on base back in the day doing the gas mains on the entire base. Things have gotten a lot tighter since 9/11. The Marines that guard the base are a bit trigger happy so ya don't push there buttons.  :o ::) >:(

I was on the Manasquan side at the very end of the walk where it turns, the tide was coming in about 1-1/2 hours to High tide. Current wasn't a problem, the wind was a pain. To tell ya the truth we should have been on the Pt side where the wind was working with you. No one was doing anything though on either side. just a slow day, I don't think the fish are here in any numbers and there not very active. I like the Raritian much better.

Yes it was no doubt about it. We just have to hit it every chance we get. Did he mention what day? Trouble for us is, we are pretty busy cleaning up the yard from winter and getting things ready for selling our home here, so we have to juggle our time. But both of us would rather be fishing. 8)

We plan on going tomorrow morning, the weather hasn't been that great cloudy and a cold front is coming in for tomorrow and possible showers. Today the wind was still out of the E-S/E, we need a good W wind.

Thanks Cap but blues are not my targeted fish, I'm targeting strippers. I hate crowds, not that I'm anti social, just don't like dealing with lots of people trying to fish in the same spot.

Soon if not already the bass will be moving up the Hudson to spawn. I have had good results fishing south of the Naval station and working my way past the mouth of the narrows bridge. Conditions , tide and wind direction are all important here, if you hit just it right you can have a great day

Yes I know how great that area is this time of year, I am just land locked because of my handy cap, so I try to hit spots that are within a close proximity of my vehicle and where I can set up a portable chair to sit on when my legs need a rest. Walking and standing for any length of time is out for me anymore. I just refuse to fall prey to my afflictions, I love salt water fishing and so does my wife, we do our best to get out when ever possible.

As a vet you should check with the visitors desk at the Earl navel depot. I know they had a program to issue permits to fish that long pier during certain times of day available to veterans and their spouses only. I know they have strict rules but if they can check your service record they do allow it and it is limited . The fishing off the end of that pier has got to be good anyway its worth inquiring about

Ill check Doug, I used to fish with a buddy of mine who worked there for 25 years and then I was told only employes were allowed to fish there, but maybe things have changed. Since I'm a DAV my wife has mentioned a few times that I look in to it. It is great fishing there but we were only allowed on the pier as far as midway and not were the ships were moored when I fished with my buddy.

Its guess that the depot and the pier are still used to supply ordnance to navel ships . You can see why the pier is so far out from land just incase of a mishap. Even if you can only fish half way to the end of the pier you will be right at the mouth of the Raritan river

The Peti officer at Earl called me back today and said everything was good as long as i go there Monday and fill out the paper work and bring in my VA disability determination to MWR. They will give me all the info on regulations for fishing the pier. I got the impression that they are only allowing DAV's to utilize the fishing pier.

I know Doug, as I said I fished it in the past with a guy I grew up with who worked in Earl as a QA, he retired in 05 and left the state. I haven't fished it since. I can remember one day in particular when we were fishing for weak fish, it was raining like mad and I was catching spots that we were live lining and as fast I was catching spots we were pulling in weak fish...it was a bonanza. Maybe 20-30 fish. We would fish nights and catch Bass like you wouldn't believe, the only set back is the height of the pier, you need a long gaff or net and the pier piles can hang you up if your not careful when fighting the bigger fish. I loved fishing the pier, I just didn't think I could get on there unless I was a employe. Ill have all the details by Monday, but from my conversation on Friday it sounds like a go.

Doug do you live near the Leanardo pier?

I am pretty sure you won't have a problem as long as your service record is good. They have to be careful even more so after 911. From the fishing boats you can see the patrol Humvees with what looks like mounted 50 cal's and if you get too close they will send out a patrol boat the fines are pretty high for violating the posted rules.
I live about 45 miles from the highlands , its where I do most of my salt water fishing these days. I live on lake Hopatcong in NW Jersey I have the lake in my back yard.  Doug

I fished lots of lakes in NJ with my son, when he was school age, and I always wanted to fish Hopatcong but never got to do it. I live about 15 minutes for the pier in Farmingdale NJ on the Colts Neck boarder. Ive lived in this area for 69 years and seen to many changes. Yes the jarheads do take there job serious, and I'm glad they do. Ma Duce is a serious deterrent, make a nice mess of things when necessary. :o ;D

Doug I went to the main post at Earl on Monday asked about getting permission to fish the Naval pier, I was given the info and told to e-mail my DAV status and full name with SSI #. I also spoke to the person I was E-Mailing, She forwarded that info to WMR and I am waiting for a reply, from that point I should be filling out the form and then get my picture taken and a pass to go on the pier. Soon as I know Ill let you know how things went.

I have the rules now and they are pretty straight forward. Contractors that are working for Earl are allowed and DAV also all civilian employes, as well as military personal. I am allowed 3 guests and each has to pay a $30.00 fee for the season as well as myself. The season is from April 1 to march 31. The hours are from 16:30 to 06:30.

No smoking, no Propane tanks, there are pier restrictions Pier 1A is the only pier you can drive on and fish+ the normal military restrictions like you can't fish where the ships are moored and if they are loading ordinance you are restricted from the pier. You have to face your vehicle to the shore and out of the lane of normal traffic.

$30 is pretty cheap when you consider the  daily party boats fares. I guess if you have problems walking driving out on the pier is a big plus. You have to post some pictures if they even allow cameras

I wouldn't think so especially in these times, but Ill ask. If we catch anything worth photographing, I'm really hoping my wife lays into a big Striper, I get more of a thrill seeing her catch a nice fish.

I corrected my bu-bu in spelling and description of COW to BIG as in fish.

That's great post some pictures of what you catch if you can. I was at the Highlands over the weekend , I don't remember the Blues being around so early and big ones in the #14 #16 range. Very hard to get anything past them to get to the bottom. I couldn't even get a ling on the boat without it being bitten in half. Its too bad the large blues taste like crap but they are fun to catch.

Yes Blues are fun to catch for a start to the season but that gets old real soon. They say if you get most of the dark fatty meat off they aren't bad. If we catch any I may just keep one and give it a try. I forgot to mention that, when I got my visitors pass to go finish my paper work at a building on post, I had to get checked at the gate. That meant get out of the vehicle open all of the interior storage areas, open the trunk, open the hood, open all of the doors , stand away from the vehicle. They check underneath with mirrors. I'm glad I didn't have to go threw a complete body search. My wife was with me but she had to stay at the visitors area until I returned. Things are very secure there now,no nonsense, and since I live 10 minutes from the main post in Colts Neck I'm glad, because a screw-up there can be very bad.

By the way I never thanked you for telling me about this in the first place. Thank You Doug! If you ever want to go out with us on the pier please let me know, the only thing you have to do is get the background check and then you will be allowed out with me at any time as my guest. Ill PM you with my #

Thanks for the offer I'm good for now but I'll keep it in mind. Glad it worked out for you . What gear are you planning on using? I think you are best off fishing incoming or high tide. Your challenge will be casting distance and then dead cranking anything you catch up to the pier

Ive fished the pier before, and I have a gaff to handle the fish, no horsing fish over the rail. As far as casting goes that isn't a problem either I can get plenty of distance, but you really don't have to go that far out there anyway...same as being on a boat, the fish are right there most of the time. Fluke are straight down hanging around the piles and anything up to 5 or 6 pounds can be cranked up anyway. No cameras on the pier. Ill have to take pictures at home.
