Title: Old style Avet JX 4:1 questions & opinions
Post by: Big Tim on June 13, 2015, 05:01:30 PM
Any input on the older style JX 4:1 reel...Drag Specs? are they the same as the newer ones (15-20). I picked one up for a song  ;D I have a JX 6:0 and love it. This will get some inshore use for rockfish, halibut, WSB, ect... Any inherent problems ?

They are totally solid reels, Tim. Just be sure to fish them routinely below a drag setting where you have any noticeable handle binding (typically closer to 10-12lbs) to keep the pinion bearing alive.

Totally adequate drag for the greater majority of what you have in mind.

Tough, solid stainless gears that are a little noisy, but we don't mind :D.

Keep an eye on the anti-reverse of the older Avets, mostly engraved sideplates, though there was a transition between engraved sideplates and the etched ones early on. If you open the two you will see what Im talking about. There is no spring loaded dogs in the later models. Drag numbers should be about the same but the newer ones state get a couple of pounds more than the older specs. Still solid reels when fished with in there there drag ratings.

Sorry I may have not been clear on what to look out for. I could not find a JX schematicfor the 4.1 but here is one for the LX, same reels just one more narrow. Check parts #24 mostly not an issue but can be a problem do to wear, #25 most issues here, and the part #27, the parts #26 are the screws holding everything together and are least likely to cause a problem,
