Title: Jeweled Sideplate On Pflueger Capital 1988
Post by: Reel 224 on June 13, 2015, 06:32:06 PM
The side plate on my Pflueger Capital 1988 needed some work and I decided to do a Jeweled finish, here are two photos of the finished product. I would like to know what you guys think.

Nice job! I just ordered some valve lapping compound the other day. It definitely gives it the look of class!

Lou: I used a small wire tool in my Dremel Tool and some JB boar past. It did take two applications because I polished with a fiber brush and then re Jeweled the plate to get the finish I was looking for. I have valve lapping compound but with brass I didn't want to etch to deeply. SS or polished Aluminum alloy would be fine using the Lapping Compound. I'd be careful with brass though.

Aluminum is softer then brass.

Aluminum is softer then brass.

I said Aluminum alloy. The alloy in Aluminum is used to harden the base mettle. There are many different forms of Aluminum alloy that are hardened for specific uses, same as steel and steel alloys. Brass in it self is very soft and wouldn't work in many applications because of that, unless there are other alloys added to it to harden it for specific uses. Aluminum Alloy can reach much more hardness then Brass Alloy. Since I have Jeweled many different types of steel and brass as well as Aluminum and seen what the results are like, I do know a little bit about what I am saying. Thanks for the tip though. But I have to disagree with that statement. Brass alloy etches much easier then most other mettle so that is what I was trying to convey to Lou.

Brass is also an alloy. One of the alloys is bronze which can be made harder then aluminum. So you can't classify all brass as soft. Tin in the right proportions changes copper to brass & bronze.

It would be nice if we stuck to my post and gave me some honest input about the jeweling that is what I was hoping for good or bad criticism is fine. In my statement to Lou I was giving him my honest advice so he had some options to consider, Ill leave it at that.

You were the one that brought up the subject of alloys and which metals were tougher. Am I not allowed to comment on that or are your threads private? If they are private then try sending a PM.

Nice job on the jeweled side plates Joe.

It's not perfect Sal I missed a few spots but when I did it,it wasn't in a jig and under a drill press. I still have to do a few more spots again. Doing it by hand with a Dremel is a task.

Thanks Fred and Sal. I was thinking about doing the inside of the Bridge as well, I know its not going to be visible when its back together, but I'm on a role now ;D This is getting habit forming. This is new territory for me and I'm liking it as a hobby in my retirement. Every time I take a reel apart I'm getting deeper and deeper into upgrading and this site makes it easy as painting by the numbers with all the help and experience that is here. I'm glad I landed here. ;D
