Title: my new project
Post by: Marcq on June 17, 2015, 10:10:01 AM
Wasn't sure where to post this but here it goes  ;D

Always wanted a westfalia, camping, fishing, hunting sounds good with VW campers but they are expensive

Got myself a 1987 VW Vanagon to explore fishing the coast of California 8)

Was looking for quite a while until I found this 1987 Vanagon in San Pedro  8)

Not perfect but lots of potential , I have a small budget on it. The only thing I need really is, a cold place for the beer and a good mattress

The project begins

Nice mexican blanket

I think it as a lot of potential

Marc, I drove one of those, loaded with construction workers for many years and never let me down. Show your project as you move along.
Nice van!

Marc - we have similar tastes!  I've wanted one of these for a few years and helped a friend by an 81 Vanagon w/ a Westy conversion a couple years back...he didn't drive stick so I spent a few days teaching him.  They are so darn cool.  My dream is a Syncro Westy with the Subi conversion.  Darn money never enough of it!

Good luck and have a ton of fun with it....I'll try to go into my photo archive and post some for inspiration :)  I have hundreds if not thousands of pictures of these beauties.

Also, if you need a good read check out Drive Nacho Drive, great journal by two travelers heading south.  Also, www.vanlife.net has some spectacular pictures that could inspire.

Looking forward to following along  ;)

Nice van!!!

Saw this a little while ago here in Aus and would be really suitable for many on over there and for us in AUS...

Not sure about parts and how readily available they would be into the future? But its certainly got me hooked on the van / fishing lifestyle.

Marcq,

Man that looks like the prefect complement to your outdoor activities. Are parts available and reasonably priced? That is exactly what I NEED, something like that. Sal comments that they are reliable, if so I hope to join you soon with one.

Wayne, my son would love one of those...he is always talking about buying one with a V-nose...understanding that it's the chrome accents on the front of the VW Bus.  Gotta love a kid that loves VWs.

Thanks guys!! Now I'm really motivated  8)

Was surprise by the built quality, it's a tough van and the 2100 water cooled pushes her pretty good  :)

But now I need to pass smog  >:(

Crash test on those are wicked

I still see a few being used every year in Baja, but none of them look as good as the photos on this post--especially El Pescador's.  I would say that since they are still surviving years on Baja's roads that they must be very reliable. ;)  ;D

They are great little vans. I have had 4 of them. They are really easy to work on and around here the parts are plentiful. There are all kinds of camping accessories to go on them. The last one I had had a screen enclosure for leaving the rear hatch open and a propane heater and fridge.Worked great at the drive- in ::) The regular heater was a bit on the weak side. Seemed to have a bit of a problem getting it to the front on really cold days.
