Title: Penn Ocean City 6/0 - service advice
Post by: Johan Fourie on December 30, 2010, 05:41:09 AM
Hallo - a very warm greeting from sunny South Africa.
Guys - I am new to this forum and would like to ask for assistance in servicing a very old reel - I have received a gift from a retired gentleman - the Penn Ocean City - Model No 606 - 6/O - made in Philadelphia USA - the reel is still in a very good condition.
I fished with it the other day and lost a small marlin due to the "stickey" star drag.
I have no schematics of this reel and I want to service it - it's just to good looking to pack away and not use it.
How do I go about servicing this reel - if there is a topic on this - please point me in the right direction - and what can I do about that "stickey" drag washers?
Thanks for a very informative site. I will be a regular visitor for sure.  :) Johan Fourie - Richards Bay - South Africa.

Welcome Johan.

I'm not sure if it's a Penn reel if it's marked with Ocean City.  Does the reel look like (http://i.ebayimg.com/22/!CBDEk!gEGk~$(KGrHqIOKpME0URskhvBBNGBBnbm!Q~~_12.JPG)

I've seen a few ocean city and they are all fairly common to other start drag reels.  You could probably use http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=208.0 as a guide.

To upgrade the drags, it's fairly simple.  All you need to do is measure the drag washers and compare them to http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=1016.0 for Carbontex washers from SmoothDrag or http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=21.0 for Penn's HT-100 drag washers.

i'm betting you will find leather drags.  it you can measure the IDxODxTH dimensions of your drag washers, i'll bet we can find something to match.

I have one of those fine old reels myself. Alan is correct..the original drag washers were leather. My Dad used it in the late 1940's to fish for BIG tarpon in Guantanamo Bay. I've endevoured to "keep it on the water" ever since. It's mounted on a (relatively) appropriate solid glass rod w/ turned wooden handle, etc. and still to this day brings fish to my boat. I have replaced those leather washers and removed Dad's old dacron line. Spooled up with 30# Momoi diamond, and spins smooth as a baby's bottom.
Johan, Clean that old reel up, remove any dried grease, old oil, etc. Re-lube,Replace the drag washers...and ENJOY...!!!
