Title: Fishing Report: Week at Dads
Post by: JoePlo on August 03, 2015, 10:38:41 PM
Spent the week in Cobbs Creek, VA with the parents. Heard the Cobia bite was on fire so had to give it a shot. 3 days of fishing and 2 nice fish.

Day 1: Just one of those days. Got out to the cobia grounds and the wind and current were too strong for the anchor I had rigged up. The original boat anchor decided to "fall off" the day prior. Took me 1hr to get the anchor set. Winds were 10-15kts NE with seas 2-4ft. A bit whippy. Set out the chum finally and got eels sent down to the bottom and instantly get hooked up. Was solo this trip so no help if it was a big one. Turns out to be a decent 40" fish. Caught my 1 fish limit so I headed home.

Day 2: Dad and I headed out later then usual. Soaked the eels and chum for about 4 hours. As hot and calm as it can get. 95+ degrees and no wind. No fish. Watched an acquaintance catch 2 fish within 15 minutes about 100ft behind us. It was his karma for giving me some tips the day prior.

Day 3: Left the dock at 0900 and got set up. Winds NE again 10-15kts and seas 2-4ft. We set up and started unloading 18 gallons of chum. 3hrs later and just a ton of rays. Somehow through the chop I spot two fat brown logs about 200ft away. Pick up my somewhat teeny Penn Spinfisher V 4500 (Next to Saragossa 8k) loaded with 30lb on an Ugly Stick Tiger Lite Jigging rod which I had rigged up with a DOA Swimming Mullet. Somehow manage a perfect toss and hook the bigger fish. In the madness I try and get Dad on the second fish that is holding onto the one I have hooked. At that moment the waves are ripping and boat is flopping around wildly. Pretty sure we were both close to getting tossed off the bow during the fight. We quickly decide trying to catch the smaller second fish is not worth losing both. Chase the fish around the boat, pass the road under the anchor line 4 or 5 times and attempt to set Dad up for the net. Net is definitely not going to work. Dad grabs the gaff and lands a perfect gaff shot under the head and the fish makes it into the boat to meet the hammer. Fish is 55" and est. 50-60lbs easy. Great day and even better experience to have with Dad.

nice report and fish.  Sounds like a great experience.  Warmer conditions than I am used to.  Thanks for sharing.  Ken
