Title: On a Grey Day!
Post by: gstours on August 15, 2015, 04:31:35 PM
Generally where I live when its a grey weather day its calm seas, cooler and without much breeze.   So I was anchored and fishing along.  Things were boringly quiet, so I thought some of you would like to see a faint rainbow,

And a photo of a Humpback Whale Tail that was feeding in the nearby area.

and a few other photos of the front flukes and the head rising out of the water spying on me!

Later the weather cleared and we got a better show,

Later on we headed home with some nice sized good eating fish!    It was great!

Gary I don't think I caught that many halibut in two years.  However, I did run into a pod of humpbacks off the California coast.  There were about 5-6 in a circle around my boat and they put on a show by fully breaching.  The sound of the water when the whales came down was exciting.  One of my best experiences when I owned my boat.  Thanks for the photos.  Dominick

Yes, when these behemoth whales come close you often go from awe to somewhat worry and close to fear and thoughts inside you start going "what if" as they could tangle on your anchor line, or upset the boat in several ways.
Several years ago a charter boat in se alaska was up ended when a humpback whale rise up way out of the waten and fell apun the bow of a boat spilling all to the water.   Luckily all were saved from drowning.   You never know till you get home when you go fishing!

I spent some time working with a Hawaiian commercial fishermen, who had a Humpback Whale breach into the hull of his Radon, while on anchor ~350miles from land.  The whale broke the drive shaft, and created a flooding situation.  Thankfully he was able to get the flooding under control, and was towed back to port by another fishermen.  They can be dangerous animals, and deserve a healthy respect.
