I have a Shimano Calcutta 50 that somebody removed the levelwind mechanism. What is the easiest way to install the levelwind mechanism on this reel. The handle side sideplate is easily removed. The other sideplate and frame is one piece. Please advise on how to proceed with this job.
there is really no easier way but if you are mechanically inclined you can do it.
do you have the 50B? if you do here's the schematics

you have to disassemble the worm shaft assembly (BNT3528). personally it's a PITA to work on these type of shimano reels just too many parts and some are too small too. but patience is a virtue...
remove #3398 by unscrewing #s36 to have access to #133
remove #133 #1476 and #1243
unscrew #1237 then slide/pull out #1842 half way pls do not lose #1440
slide/pull out #3528 all the way leaving #1699 in its place then slide out #1837 just enough so you can slide #3392 thru #1842 and #1837
then pushed #1842 and #1837 then install #1243 and #1347 then clip with #133
install #1440 by screwing #1237
next step, please be careful so as not to damage #42 and/or #3528
insert #42 then cap with #1840, don't forget #60
check if functioning properly by turning the worm shaft
don't forget screw back the left plate
hope i didn't miss something...
btw have you looked in the shimano board for a similar reel?
here you go it's similar but unfortunately he didn't show how he removed the worm shaft. it's a larger souped-up lefty-version of your 50.
