Title: Navarre Skunk Report
Post by: Shark Hunter on September 20, 2015, 05:57:25 PM
This was my first trip that I got Skunked. A cold front moved in on my arrival.
The biting flies were terrible. Nothing that 40% deet didn't take care of.
Spent 9 days on the Beach. It rained two. We fished five and relaxed the other two.
I had primo bait and nice weather. It just wasn't in the cards.
Nothing Broke and no one got hurt. That's a successful trip to me. ;D
It was good to see my Brother.
Keith supplied me the biggest Bonita I have ever seen.
Probably spent 40 hours on the sand without a click. Seaweed was a problem.
I'll get'em next time. ;)

Hard to accept a skunk isn't it?  I've never been able to say 'oh well'.

Glad you got to spend some time with your brother.  Mine was supposed to show up to help me work on my boat, but no..........

I didn't realize a cold front would shut down sharks.

That's why it's called fishing er vacation.  Sitting on a beach in anticipation of some action is fun.  Dominick

I'm glad that you guys got the opportunity to give it an honest shot.

What is that they say about fishing and work again?

The more time and effort spent pursusing your quarry, the more you will appreciate the sucess, when it happens.

Darn, Mr. Shark, that's a tough break.   :-\

Still, I daresay there isn't a single angler here who hasn't flown the Skunk Flag at one time or another. Part of our passion, I guess. And when you do finally score the Big One --and you will-- think how sweet it'll be!!   ;)

Tough luck my friend but when you go big like that, it's hero or zero as you know...your bite will come. No doubt some six footers saw that bait and decided they weren't messing up big daddy's dinna. Hope you guys had a great trip and safe trip home.

My Senators will be back Adam.
I've caught at least one nice shark every time before I have went to the gulf.
I know the crabs ate well on my primo bait.
We were setting drops three at a time. 200, 300 and 500 yards out.
It is what it is. We still had a great time.
Chilling by the pool, drinking some cold ones, waiting to hit the beach after every one else leaves.
Somebody's gotta do it. ;)
Life is good! ;D

Daron,
When I got my first salmon fishing boat the first gift I received was the skunk flag.  I always flew it on the way out, but it rarely flew too long as we were fishing for salmon or rock fish.  The other fishermen always got a laugh out of the "skunk" and that is probably what kept me flying it.
I know I don't need to tell you this, but you had friends and family with you and you will have memories of this trip long after you remember is you caught a fish or not.  Congratulations, my friend!!

Thank You Tom,
Good Times with Family is what its all about. We had a blast.
Very Nice and clean hotel room. I had tons of gear. Fished every rod I brought.
I know I married a good woman when she said, " I'll get in the shower after you wash your fishing rods"
Life is Good! ;D

Man, 500 yds out? If you nail a big boy at that distance it will be a bigtime workout.
You'll get em next time around.
.................lou

Hey, just curious, on occasion when we shark or tuna  fish we like to take a whole bait and stuff some cotton down their gullet and fill them with bunker oil and wire the mouth shut. Ever try that?

No, I haven't Lou. Not sure what Bunker Oil even is.
After a couple hours, the bait is crabbed out. Then we run out fresh. The Bonita is extremely Bloody.
I need to start using stingray, I had my Bow with me, but didn't shoot any.

Mr D.
Bunker oil is the oil that comes from menhaden. Bait fishing here for tuna can be 300ft or more deep. A lot of times the tuna are suspended a 100/150ft so no crabs to worry about. We've even stuck a piece of rag in the baits gullet and then squirt some bunker oil from a squeeze bottle into them to saturate the rag. Wire them shut and then you have this pungent oil leaking from your bait continually. I'm a firm believer in scents.
A lot of times I'll take my artificials the night before, put them in a ziplock with scent, soak them overnight and fish them the next day. I may have several bags ready and change lures out occasionally to make sure they leave scent an oil slick in the water.
Might be a bit extreme but it works!!

I've been using the Berkley Gulp Alive soaking them in a jar. Going to find some Bunker oil because it can't hurt to try it.

The great thing about the bunker oil is not only the smell but the visible slick it leaves in the water.

It's probably available at any local live bait shop here in Florida.
