I made a few new additions to my prewar saltwater fishing reel collection...

Left front - A.F.Meisselbach & Bothers - Triton take-apart
Left rear - Abbey & Imbrie - Surf King Special No. 100
Middle -Abbey & Imbrie - Silver King No. 82
Right rear - Ocean City - Ike Walton Club take-apart, 300yd
Right front - Ocean City - Dover Club - take-apart
All but one have star drags, and I believe these guys are all ca. 1920s.
& here is what my reel collection looks like at this point in time (minus some ads, catelogs, and a few reels that still requine some assembly)...

I may need another display case :)
Wow, quite the group.
I need to add another shelf to my cabinet myself.
Goodonya John. Dominick
Looking good John. Yes you will definitely need another display case. Make sure the next one is a larger one, or you will need another still.
Don't ask how I know ;D.
All look good, but those two large Senators with the wood handle really caught my eye. Very nice.
Looking Good John. ;D
NICE COLLECTION ....THANKS FOR SHARING
QuoteI may need another display case
Oh yea, your collections is growing. You have some interesting pieces there. That big first gen Senator on the bottom right is a 14 or 16/O. If it is a 16/O we have to talk.

A 14/0, with incorrect (numbered) handle, spool (1-piece), stand, jack, and yoke.

Still a great reel, even though the parts have been updated. Now you have to search out the correct parts. No easy task. Probably the best way will be to find a early second gen reel, swap out the correct parts onto your reel and use the incorrect parts to make the second gen reel a good fishing reel.

That is the plan. Though I realize finding the right doner reel may he no easy task either. However, I am up to the challenge.
Great collection but only one Newell?? ??? ;D
You don't mess around john... Looking good pal!

ya think? :D
really nice collection!
Wow that is a sweet collection!
Very nice!
Finally found a first year (ca. 1939) Squidder 140. It has found a home next to my ca.1941-42 Surf masters (200 & 201).

Nice find John! What kind of stand is on the reel and what kind of markings are on the bottom of the stand?

That is the perfect stand, too bad about the notch; but, it is much more important in terms of correctness than terms of perfect condition or the better quality stand. That is a very hard stand to find and it categorizes the reel as a first year reel. Great find! Physically it is a 155 stand; but, I believe the markings make it a 1939 Squidder stand only. Mostly, this little piece of info gets past most sellers.
Those are some beauties ya got there, John! I just picked up a first year squidder as well, they aint easy to find.
Your collection needs a bigger display cabinet or maybe a display room at the rate you've been going... sweet picking!
That notch may have been put in there for a bottle opener ;D
Thanks for showing

Never thought of that Dom, but then I just use my teeth ;D ;D
John, you are getting some dandys and I agree with Mike, those first year squidders are near impossible to find. At that time it could have been classified as a "rich mans" surf caster. $25 was a truckload of money in 1939 for such a small reel. It was Penns first attempt at a world class surf caster, and they nailed it, but made those who bought it pay dearly for the engineering that went into it. That same year (1939) you could buy a 9/0 senator for just $4 more than that little squidder.
P.S. John, that middle glass shelf looks like it's reached it's load capacity :D :D
Guess that was $27 (shipped) well spent!
;)
John,
I got robbed ;)... Mine was $40 shipped. Clearly ours didn't come on a properly listed auction, Nice👍
Well spent,

I'm sure that won't happen again to either one of our reels.

I bet you're right Dom, the seller of Johns reel never mentioned the bottle opener bonus !! :o :o
....and you got jipped cause yours didn't come with that factory option. :D :D
How about a minty, possibly NOS, 9/0 with a Lighthouse box...

This reel has externally accessible drags, and a rosewood torpedo handle, with large coin-edgediscounts counterweight.

These are my first Lighthouse boxes, and along with the reeks, were aquired locally.
The seller had indicated that the the 9/0 was still new, and in the origional box. I didn't find any more information about the 4/0 box, and the LongBeach that I aquired from the same guy.
Pretty stoked to have found these gems in Hawaii.
John
Good for You John.
Definitely Gems you have there. That 9/0 is Shweeeeet!!! ;D
Nice! That 9/0 is quite a find, especially for Hawaii.
the 4/0 box is killer. The first year 4/0 box is marked $17.50. The reel went up one dollar in its second year; but, Penn did not make new labels, all the did was make sticker to go over the old price. Under that sticker should be a price of $17.50.

Honestly.. this is the 1 piece of the four that I had my sights set on. I was stoked to get all 4 pieces. Now I am struggling with the prospect of dismantling that beautiful 9/0 to upgrade a first Gen 9/0, and pair it with the box... which should be correct for a second + year 9/0.
I don't think I can bring myself to do it, plus some of the pretty chromed parts are not actually 100% correct for the first gen. 9/0.
Maybe I will sell the reel, and the LB, but keep the stand bolts, clamp, brace, and tag?
Maybe I should just keep the package whole, since it has apparently been that way, unfished for nearly 70.
I will probably do the later.
The parts from that reel are not correct for a first gen 9/0. Also with a price of $32.50 the box is not correct either.
I hope you do nothing as you indicated, as doing things like this does nothing to help.

The box for the 9/0 is '46-'50, and the reel is a second generation, which it should be for those years. I'm not following this discussion.... ??? The 4/0 box is '39-45 and should have come with a first generation reel, maybe second if later in that range... pretty sure that's correct...

Correct.
I intend to keep the 9/0 reel and box together in 'as found' condition.
The 4/0 reel was missing, but will match up well with a 1939 4/0, if I ever find one for my senator grouping.
I am interested in selling the ca. 1939 LB65, 300yd reel though.
Sid,
You have first dibs. Everything appears correct, except of course the pflueger thumb stall add on. It would like you clean up well, though probably not as nice as this one of Ted's...
http://m.ebay.com/itm/151985989948
What do you guys think a reasonable current fair market/friend value would be on this reel?

Thanks, John. I'm interested, it will go nicely in my collection. Can you post up or send me more pics? The stand is stamped 300 yds? Looks like it will clean up nice! Is that a rosewood torpedo knob?
Thanks
Sid
Sid,
Actually, this is a ca. 1939 LB66, with a stand stamped "400 yds". The knob is wood colored plastic, and is slightly translucent in parts, under the right light. It has a mushroom pin on the arbor.
It seems to be in really good overall condition. The clicker is loud, drag is smooth, gears are smooth, no marring or damage on any screws, and no noticable chips (except a microscopic one where the freespool lever contacts the side plate), wear, or scratches on the bakelight (except a few minor ones on the knob). There is only a little minor plating loss (stand underside, spool arbor, and flanges near the arbor), and a few very small pock marks in the spool, and just some light crud/corrosion buildup around the bases of the posts. This reel is in the best condition of any pre 1940 Penns that I own.

According to Mike's book the value is between $50 & $100 depending on condition. Make me a reasonable offer, and I will package it up and ship it your way.

My newest addition arrived today. A NOS Pflueger Oceanic 1885, complete with Edward. K. Tryon Co. 910-912 Chestnut St. Phila. $3.75 tag., "Bearing Oil Feeder" tag, and a Pflueger thumb brake. Not an uncommon or expensive reel, but NOS is cool. The reel looks like it just came out of the box, despite being old.
I would appreciate any leads on the difficult to find correct box.
Also, is there anyway to nail down a date of manufacture on this one?*
*I believe this is a secind version (based on m9del numver appearing on the reel) wHicham were made ca. 1934-1957.
John
Nice. NOS on something 75 years old is always cool.
Neat piece John! Fun seeing what you bring home some days. ;D
