Title: 9/0 Build
Post by: thorhammer on October 16, 2015, 01:12:40 AM
Waiting on Adam's next insert run but had to go ahead with what I had: Cortez Conversions frame and  Area Rule T-Bar to start. Hunting some SS beauty rings. It will get 600 yds 100lb PP with 80 mono topshot. Frame is first rate as everything from Tom H.

Looks Good! ;) I run straight 80lb mono on mine. It works out fine for the fishing I do.

What's an Area Rule T-bar? Nice reel btw! Hoping I can budget one of Tom's frames before they sell out lol

Off of the Tiburon T-Bar handle page:

QuoteT-Barâ„¢ articulated reel handles are the first ergonomically correct reel handles ever developed. This revolutionary patented design was first created by Brooks Morris of Area Rule Engineering, and is still today the big game fishing industry's first choice in fighting reel handles.

Yes, Area Rule, named after an engineering paradigm, designed the articulated grip then later licensed Tiburon for manufacturing. This is a vintage crank bearing Area Rule and Tiburon mill marks. This handle came from a full Accurate conversion Senator I bought at a pawn shop for $20....can you say laugh to the bank?

Those are definitely some of the strongest handle available, mine was given to me by a good friend here and was really surprised by the craftsmanship. They're a little on the heavy side, but still very nice.
I must say though, with the custom parts we have available on this site, the one on the right is not too shabby, probably a tad stronger.

I've seen some Tiburon handles go over $60....you did really good.

Tiburon makes some good products. I stick with the frames. A Keta Krank and a 5/0 Kokelar is the toughest there is. JMO

Yes, Lee did make some awesome handles, I had some to do with that design in the beginning. I did request them to be a little shorter, but they never happened.
Those would need an extension on your index, so you could adjust the star while fighting a fish.
They are tough though.

That picture was one from my recent builds. Mr. Putman made me many variations. Single sleeve positions, up to three. I am fortunate to have capitalized on these when they were popular. Adam is his successor, but Lee did some quality work when he was in the game and I am forever grateful. ;)
His fit and finish was bar none. :o

And so is everyone else here. Now lets get back to Thor's awesome build.

I had a Thorhammer from some years back I had sort of forgotten about; the 9/0 will live here for a while until I cipher out what it will get permanently. When Adam's next inserts are ready, I suspose I may as well go ahead with SS sleeve, and if that, SS handle arm as Darron indicated. I think I recall the inserts tested out somewhere north of 75lbs, I won't need that but I think SS will top aluminum arm in this set-up.

Sal, are those rings powder coated? Kind of looks like The Tank.

Agree, and from pics alone as I've never held one. If I see any available it will be cause to build a motor around it.

Yes Thor, those are the same as the Tank. Jamie did a bunch for me a while back.
Here is where he first posted about it:

I'm not sure why he's coming up as Guest :-\
The Tank has been on a few fishing trips, Dominick usually sends it back for me afterwards so I could take a look.
The powder coated rings still look the same as the day I installed them.

That's because I make sure not to bang the Tank around.  I wrap the reel in my shirt  ::) so don't complain about me being shirtless. :o Dominick

I have been wrapping my reels in shirts for a while Dominick.
I'm upgrading. ;D
Now back to Thor's awesome build before I get scolded again.

I think that I misread your post. "You said that you were wrapping your reels with Dominick's Shirts". Did I get that right??

Just a stress test on parts.

I'll bet you won't find a 6/0 or 9/0 Senator as smooth the customized ones we have here, when pushed at 35 lbs.
It's all about smoothness at high drag settings.
