Title: Isla Guadalupe or Bust...!
Post by: Aiala on October 23, 2015, 12:46:23 AM
Well, talk about lucky timing! Seems that after a long closure, the Mexican authorities have finally decided to allow some fishing at Guadalupe, so that's where I'll be headed next week aboard ROYAL STAR. The SHOGUN has been out there this week, and they've been landing a lot of BIG yellowfins up to 125 lbs and some bruiser YTs up to 40 lbs...whew! I'm mighty glad I decided to get a 2-speed AVET HX MC loaded with 80... I might just need it... woohoo!   :D

And wouldn't it be a treat to see one of those massive Guadalupe white sharks... maybe even Deep Blue herself!   :o

Am I stoked?? Not much!   ;D

Don't worry -- you will see some Whites out there, Aiala...

Mexico has protected the Great Whites for years now -- and they swarm there between August and November each year.

Guadalupe is 184 Miles NW of Cedros -- but the depth really drops off all around the Island.

Bring extra Topshot line -- because you may get bit off a few times when retrieving your catch.

The Whites prefer the different varieties of Seals -- up to the Elephants -- but will take anything that is an opportunity -- including the Cow on the end of your line.

Good call on the Avet 2-Spd -- Make sure you know when and when not to shift -- I am sure you do.  No need to strip the gears.

Eat your Wheaties -- got a feeling you will get a real workout on this one.

Neat trip on a great vessel.

Good Luck,

Fred

Thanks, everyone! In fact, I fished the island once nearly twenty years ago aboard the SUPREME, but we didn't stay long and left pretty quickly on our way south to Alijos. I never thought I'd live to see it again, which is why this is a really exceptional treat for me. Guadalupe is one of those magnificently forbidding spots that few people (except for crazy anglers) ever get to visit, so I am really looking forward to this voyage.   :)

Meantime, I'm dialing up my tackle, replacing one Jigmaster with a 114H and taking along another blinged 4/0. I may have to leave behind my beautiful little Monofil greenie, though; I hate the thought of it being ripped apart by some furious giant toothfish.   :P

John, I sure hope so!   ;)

I've got a pair of Avet 2-speeds, one JX and a new HX that just came in the mail today. I hope they'll suffice; if not, maybe the boat will have an International or something I can use. Still, my personal best YFT was 125 lbs, on a stock 9/0 with 80 lb test... although admittedly I was lots younger then.  (http://www.unsere-hochzeitsseite.de/tinymce/jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/oma.gif)

Mike, that hurricane will be long dissipated by the time I go, and anyway it's too far south to have much effect, although maybe some oceans swells will still linger.

Gee, I don't know about those Wheaties... maybe some Geritol??   ;)  :D

Aiala, I can't give advice about cow hunting down baja, but what I can say is this...I agree with Sal on a totally blinged out 9/0 as being "able to get the job done". That said I too am heading to the canyons tonight in search of XXL fish with the largest arrow in my quiver being a stock 9/0. Boy do I feel under gunned. Even if it had all the bling, which I think can give you an impressive 70# of drag😝 I wish I had a nice 50 wide or even an 80wide TWO SPEED! Alas, finances don't allow it this year but you can be sure next year I'll be going to the ball game with a much larger bat. My point being.... I love the senator series and have more than I can count. But at the end of the day by the time your done upgrading a 9/0 with stainless this and stainless that were damn close to what a nice two speed used would cost. Bring a cannon to a gun fight...IMHO.
Hope you get a bunch that test your tackle to the limits.because this is where all of us TRUELY want to have happen. Best of luck, can't wait for the report and pictures...please!

Tight lines,
Bob

I'm envious too.  I've been lucky enough to have gone twice.  My dad's best friend needed a buddy and he'd pay half my fare.  We with with Mike and Marcy on the Trilene Big Game. They had this lug-a-buddy for 1/2 price if you paid way in advance. So I really paid like 1/4th the price and he took me twice :-)  Cannot remember the captains name on first trip. Funny little guy and loved to dove hunt.   I can remember when I was trying to through some 6x Salas at a some birds  I thought were on some bait  and he came out and took my rod for a while and tried to get a great white to follow it.  He got it's attention but never could get it near the boat to see it.

One both trips the bait rolled on the way down.. so it sure made for tough fishing and late nights making bait.

Don't be afraid to take a nap and come back out at night.  Dropper Looping at night is a great way to catch big yellows down there.  That is where I learned to make a Lupe Dropper Loop.

And a 2 speed is a must. I missed out on my personal best YFT over 200#'s  I got it to about 40 feet and couldn't move it with my neweled 4/0 with high speed gears.  Finally lost it i the anchor rope on 3rd or 4th trip around the boat.  Should have stood in the corner as it was just making what I know now as death spirals.

Good luck.

Going to the Lupe is on my wish list. Living on the east coast it is not that easy nor inexpensive to fish in Baja but I had the pleasure to fish at Alijos a couple times as well as the lower banks on long range trips but I have always been fascinated to fish at Guadalupe. I did go to the East Cape fishing twice and loved that also.
Have a great trip.

Bob the Lupe is not really thought as a cow tuna destination. But, it can kick out some 100-150lb YFT, once in a while some larger fish due show up but you have to be on one of those lucky trips.

Nice fish for sure and Aiala if you have a 30 sized two speed or can get your hands on one I for sure would take it along.

Would be nice to see you get it done with the 9/0, it has been done before and could be done again, only easier now with the upgrades available to us.
If fishing gets too easy, we would lose interest ;).
Just my opinion, use what you're comfortable with. ;D

All these tank-style upgrades are spectacular, Sal, but remember, I can't handle the kind of macho drag numbers you fellows produce; I have no desire or ability to go mano a mano with some fish version of a Mac truck.   ::)   ;D

;D ;D...contrary to popular believes, stretching drag numbers makes it more manageable at where it was intended to be used at and past that. I know you could handle it. ;)
Try not to go flying, I wouldn't feel right afterwards ;D

This is going to be a great experience, I am super excited for you, going to live vicariously through you on this trip.

I hope you have an amazing time Aiala!

You will be fine with the HX, plenty of line capacity if you are running braid, and the right drag capabilities. Last trip report  at the Lupe, on the shogun, said they were using 40-60# for fly-lining, I have seen some of your gear, you've got it covered.

Good luck, and most importantly,  have fun!!!

I bought the HX from CharkBait, and it came filled with 300 yds of 80-lb braid and the rest is 50-lb topshot, so I hope that will work out okay. I'm going to put it on my new Phenix Axis HAX820H... (This is a Phenix-sponsored trip, so I had to have at least one of their rods!   ;)  )

The STAR is on a 5-day right now, I don't know if they're fishing the Lupe, but yesterday they were into mostly 80-lb YFTs:  http://www.royalstarsportfishing.com/detailed_report.php?report_id=6780290

But I have reeled up a barn door halibut and a few monster gator gar. More like dead weight than a freight train, though.

I notice both fish have clipped tails. Is this to ID or mark the fish as yours or other?

Interesting popularity trend going on over the last 20 pages..(okay, my honey do list allows for a short break)..

Well, I am finally home safe and sound, and not too the worse for wear, although I must admit that those tunas gave me a workout the likes of which I have seldom (if ever) experienced. I ended up with half a dozen of them, probably totaling something north of 300 lbs, which will yield me around 120 lbs of fillets... enough to share with all my friends and neighbors and still have enough to last me until my next trip in June, an 8-day aboard ROYAL STAR again. (Conflicts with SOA, alas, but so it goes.) Oh, and one yellowtail around 20 lbs... caught on the very first drop with a purple-and-black yoyo iron. (I won't be sharing him...!) Thought I'd get a bunch more, but it didn't happen... c'est la vie.  ::)

I really appreciate everyone's encouragement and good wishes... I know you would have enjoyed the trip as much as I did. It meant a lot to know that the AT crew was pulling for me... I needed it!   ;)

I must apologize for the dearth of pictures, but actually the ones I posted already pretty much covered it; one YT, and several YFTs. I would've taken more, but the fish were coming on so strong that the deck crew was constantly busy and didn't have time to stop and take a lot of photos.

Anyway, briefly, here's how the trip went:

We left San Diego mid-morning and headed south to Ensenada to clear Mexican customs. We got there around 4:30, and were boarded by machine-gun-toting soldiers and a sniffer dog. It took about an hour for them to thoroughly inspect the vessel and get all the paperwork sorted out, whereupon we headed back out to sea bound for Guadalupe. Captain Brian Simms told us that the wind was going to come on strong during the night, up to 30 knots from the northwest, and by gosh he was dead right. We woke up to some pretty heavy seas, pitching and yawing in the trough. Rock 'n roll! But by noon we were in sight of the island, and once we got in the lee things calmed considerably.

We started fishing around 1:30 pm, and after my one yellowtail and a few others the tunas started hitting. I hooked up right away, and landed two pretty quickly. Right about then the first huge great white showed up and chomped one of the other angler's tuna at boatside, leaving a head that weighed about 20 lbs. (This scenario would unfold repeatedly throughout the trip... it's called "paying the Tax Man".)   :o  These monster sharks are magnificent and frightening beasts, all teeth and attitude. Seeing them in their natural state was something I've wanted to do since I was a kid... Now that I have, I can say it was worth the wait.

After a great dinner (food aboard ROYAL STAR is simply outstanding) we went to sleep tired and happy. Next morning dawned much calmer, the wind backed off, and the tunas started biting right away. I managed to land four, which frankly kicked my butt. At this juncture I have to say that this business of rail fishing isn't entirely my cup of tea; my back ached, my hands got bruised and raw, and half the time I couldn't gain any line despite winding for all I was worth. Perhaps it's a function of my advancing years, but as I recall, the old lift-and-wind-down method, complete with belt and harness, was far less taxing on my body. If I ever do get a chance to fish for these size tuna again, I'm going to bring a Cal Sheets International 30 --with lugs-- and a kidney harness.   :P

At any rate, I was done in by then, and retired to the showers. The following day was bright, sunny, hot. Since we already had lots of tuna, Brian decided we would look for some yellowtail, so we cruised all the way down south to Tuna Alley, trolling up the trip's lone wahoo along the way. The scenery was beyond spectacular, but the YTs weren't cooperating due to lack of current, so we reversed course and returned to our productive tuna spot. Sure enough, they were still on the chew, and rods went bendo on all sides. I hooked up too, to a powerhouse tuna, who pinned me fast to the rail and defeated every attempt I made to retrieve line. After forty minutes of this, suddenly my line went POP!... the Tax Man had struck. Damn!    :(

I took a break to grab a soda, then flung another fat sardine and WHAM, an even more powerful and intractable tuna took off for the horizon, sizzling braid off my HX at an alarming rate. I somehow got him stopped, whereupon he headed for the depths and pinned me to the rail again. By this time I was seriously running out of gas, but I was determined to get this guy and kept reeling, gaining mere inches, until after another forty minutes... POP goes the Tax Man... again!   >:(

Well, that was it for me. I could barely move, I was so drained, and I decided that it was time for me to retire my tag number. I racked my gear, hit the shower, and emerged greatly refreshed in time to miss the epic bite of the trip as 100-to-150 lb YFT came blasting through eating everything in sight until darkness fell... sigh! But the truth is, I couldn't have handled any more, and I was already more than satisfied with my catch.   :D

On our trip back, the ocean was gentle as a pond... amazing how conditions could change so quickly. Through Ensenada with its guns and dog again, then back home to San Diego where we quickly cleared customs and then had to wait for over an hour while the ROYAL POLARIS off-loaded her fish at the only available dock space. I had already arranged to have my fish processed (BTW, the tail-clipping is done to indicate which fish are going to the processor) so I loaded up my car and after goodbyes all around to the crew and passengers, headed back to Palm Springs, content and still feeling the familiar rocking motion of the boat.

So that's it... until next time!   8)

Wow! Quite a trip. Would have loved to have been on top of the boat watching all the action especially when the great whites came rolling through.

Do I want to do this?  Not really sure a yes will come out of my mouth.

Glad you survived the Tuna dishing out their best.

You have my respect and admiration and are a treasured asset on AT's forum!

Congratulations Aiala! ;D
Thanks for taking us along. Sounds like you had a good time.
You are home safe and that's what really matters.
I would have loved to tangle with the Tax Man.
You need to get you a Harness to go with that belt.
It makes life much easier.

Mr. Shark, I'm sure you would! But since even the Godfather would be hard-pressed to handle one of these leviathans, maybe you'd better get yourself one of those massive Everol 20/0s...  :o

Then, to simulate the experience, just hook up to the nearest passing freight train (and wear a harness, LOL)   ;)   :D   ;D

Fishing for GWS is illegal in the eastern Pacific as far as I know. Remember, they eat seals. They are our friends :).

[/quote] But IF you HAPPEN to hook one you still have to bring it in to remove the hook.  ;D

Great White Sharks are protected as an endangered species in many waters around the world.

If caught incidentally -- the best way to deal with the issue and give the GWS the best chance of survival -- is to cut the line as soon as you know it is a GWS.

Many times these large Apex Predators are stressed to the point during a tough fight -- and being out of the water when the hook is attempted to be removed -- will cause their eventual death even after release back into the sea.

Some may not agree -- but a lost hook and leader is nothing compared to the death of one of these beautiful creatures.

Yes, like the Grizzly, Polar Bear, Tigers, and other top predators -- they have a place in Nature's food chain -- and as responsible anglers and sportsmen and sportswomen -- we should encourage and respect that.

Just my opinion.

Best,

Fred

Great fishing Aiala, keep up the good work and keep the boat bloody.

Dwight, I neglected to mention that I was wearing my lucky Newell Nut earrings the whole time!

I don't go fishing without 'em.  :D

Wow, thanks for the story it's almost like being there except I'm not tired and sore.  What a spectacular trip, and feeding great whites boatside too!  My hat is off to you for your tenacity and spirit for adventure, I can't wait for my first LR trip.  Will be on the RS also.

Terrific, David! I promise you will not be disappointed. Is that Jon Vadney's Seeker 12-day next November? I'd give anything to be on that trip, but I just don't know if I can swing being away that long... lots of family responsibilities.  :-\

Aiala: Great report! I'm so glad you got to go, since I've never caught one of those Tunas exceeding #40 and know what a chore that was I can only imagine the taxes one pays to reel in a big one. You are to be commended on your efforts. I would love to see one of those GWS up close, as long as he was taking someone else's fish  ;D
