Title: Upgrading a Jigmaster 506
Post by: Alto Mare on November 17, 2015, 12:54:55 AM
I got this nice reel for a very good price, so I decided to upgrade it
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/DSC_0002%201.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/pescatore1/media/DSC_0002%201.jpg.html)
the seller mentioned that the reel was in excellent shape and he was right
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/DSC_0004%201.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/pescatore1/media/DSC_0004%201.jpg.html)
the inner parts were loaded with grease, that stuff was so nasty, the brass changed color
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/DSC_0005%201.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/pescatore1/media/DSC_0005%201.jpg.html)
decided to go with the double dogs on this one
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/DSC_0010%201.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/pescatore1/media/DSC_0010%201.jpg.html)
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/DSC_0019%202.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/pescatore1/media/DSC_0019%202.jpg.html)
parts for the upgrade are on the right
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/DSC_0014%201_1.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/pescatore1/media/DSC_0014%201_1.jpg.html)
and here is the finished reel
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/DSC_0025_1.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/pescatore1/media/DSC_0025_1.jpg.html)
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/DSC_0027%201.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/pescatore1/media/DSC_0027%201.jpg.html)
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/DSC_0031%201.jpg) (http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/pescatore1/media/DSC_0031%201.jpg.html)
This is a nice one and works great!

Sal, that's sweet right there. You are a machine; didn't you just "upgrade" the Mag 10 yesterday? ;D Where does one get the six-shooter knob?

Nice job, Sal --

Those 506s are a terriffic reel.

With your focused upgrades -- it is now bulletproof.

Best,

Fred

I thought the double dog SS bridge didn't fit with the 505/506 reels because of the bearing spacing?

John, things have been a little quiet around here, as for tutorials and upgrades, I thought I make some noise ;)
Here is the list for the parts used, just in case someone else has a question about them:

SS dogs, handle knob, SS  heat treated 5:1 gears, heat treated gear sleeve, SS jack and yoke and SS spacer bars, all from Pro Challenger (Black Pearl )

SS star was a gift from Dave (Jurelometer )...holes drilled by me

SS Handle from Motive Fabrication (Three se7ens)

Drag kit from Bryan Young

Washers for under the gear and on top made by me from McMaster-Carr's sheets

and that's about it.

On the fourth picture you will notice the bridge is stock from Penn, I installed the pins for the extra dog and spring.

Nice work!
Especially on the bridge assembly.  I like the custom holes drilled into the custom star... ads a touch of class.

Beautiful reel, Sal.  It makes me want to dig into a 501 that recently came to me.

Yet another in the seemingly endless succession of custom super-reels from the Maestro... wow!   :o

Are those McMaster Delrins pre-cut or do you punch them out yourself?   :)

Aiala, I punch my own, but I believe Dawn has anything you need at a very reasonable price.

Nice job Sal, very neat as usual. The back of the second dog looks very close to the eccentric jack location, were there any clearance issues?
Michael

PS: I am not going to mention the alternating dogs  :)

Michael, as mentioned above the reel is working nicely, no clearance issues.
There is a way you could figure out where to position the new dog. An easy way is to look at a well used bridge, you should be able to see marks from the jack and yoke.
Another way is to assemble the bridge and clutch assembly without the plate.
Good eye on the alternating dogs, I decided to let this one go, but could change it easily and probably will.
It does help with handle play a little, but not by much.
I also want to mention that Pro Challenger custom spacer will not fit the opening on this plate, you could enlarge the hole a little, or simply use stock.
