Title: penn 100 gets hard to turn when drag is applied
Post by: fishhawk on November 24, 2015, 06:27:27 PM
I have run into this problem before, but for the life of me can't remember how I fixed it! My keyed drag washer is in place and I have tried several different sized sleeves.....HELP!!!
thanx!!!

if it's in free, sometimes the star bottoms out against the side plate.  if the spool gets sticky under heavy load, sometimes it rubs against the frame because the bushings are worn.  those are the two that come to mind first.

If you open that reel back up, use an O-Ring to help hold the drags in place for when you put them back.
I'm thinking that's your issue, but it could very well be what is  mentioned above.

I'm holding the bridge assmbly. in my hand as we speak and it works fine! the star drag must be rubbing my plate.I thought I tried a longer sleeve, but maybe not????

Maybe the wrong washers??

Not likely the wrong spacers because that was the only reel I had open at the time. The only other reel I might have had open was a squider 146 and I believe they use the same drags????????

DRAG WASHERS! carbon fiber, ht-100, etc. Do you have a wave washer on top of the last keyed metal washer? Is the spool seated correctly & turning free? Is the pinion gear installed right side up? Is the jack on top of the yoke? Are you sure that there is not an old fiber washer stuck either under or in the bottom of the main gear? How about some photos during assembly.

I think it may call for a shorter spacer if you stay with those drags.

You can grind it down yourself if you don't have any extra sizes on hand.

Everything looks ok to me, besides the height.

EDIT: Is your under gear washer chopped up?  Hard to tell from that pic.  I like mine really smooth.  But I'm going with the height.

yes sir I have ever size spacer bp offers, don't seem to matter.
You mentioned something about spool spacing? Seems to be fine with wonderful free spool.
The only thing I did to this reel before I had problems was to put the newell bars and foot on it.
????????
My under gear washer is the delrin one and it's fine

You are actually lower than usual with the stack, the eared washer is usually even with the lip of the main gear.
I'm going to repeat myself, as I've mentioned above, your issue is with assembly, the eared washer is popping out as you assemble the bridge. If that washer gets tilted it will still give drags but the handle would be very hard to turn.
Assemble the washers, place a rubber band on top of the sleeve to help hold everything down as you assemble the bridge and I'm sure your problem will go away.

Thanks everyone for your input! Not sure which one fixed it, but it's fine now!
I replaced under gear washer (delrin) with one a little larger in diameter, I squeezed clutch springs together, (remembered I had previously stretched them out),replaced star drag with one that has the indention cut out in it,loosened n tightened bridge screws, replaced left side bushing. and all seems well!!!
Seems like on several reels where I have installed bp's spacing sleeve I found that after you get it in, loosen bridge screws, seat spacer then re-tighten and it will work much better!
thanx-again
