I'm thinking of converting my 500 to a 501 and was wondering what parts I'd need and a general cost associated with doing so.....
or would it be better/easier to buy a 501 off fleabay ??? ??? ??? ???
It depends on how fancy you want to go. For a basic conversion a set of penn 501 crossbars and reel stand ,with a 501 spool will get the job done. The spool is the hardest thing to find here on long island. Then there are the stainless steel cross bars from pro challenger or the tiburon frame and spool if you want something more fancy . I purchase alot of parts thru Scotts mysticparts but they no longer have the factory spools but still have crossbars and reel stands....good luck and have fun building your conversion

Just a humble opinion the aluminum spool will cost $40 to $60 used so if you can find a used reel with an aluminum spool for under $70 or so you would be ahead Doug
PJ you can spend a lot :o building a narrow 501 or you can buy one already done:
this one looks good, but not sure I like the price:

Or if you want something to do it all from casting, jigging, yellowtail, ect... for a few $$ more and you wont be disappointed...IMHO

Don't want to talk for PJ, but I shipped PJ a 501 yesterday out of my stash, so I think he's set.
And It was a bit cheaper than I was seeing on EBay. ;)
