All of my experience has been working on small bait casters from the main manufactures. I want to learn Penn reels. So that I am not learning on someone else reel, I want to buy some off eBay and learn on my own. Then apply what I have learned on other people's reels. So here is the question, can someone help me with a short list of Penn reels that would give me the basics on Penn reels? I am on the west coast and we do have a large number of people ocean fishing for salmon and bottom fish. Alaska has many halibut fishing charters. What are the most popular of these Penn reels that everyone sees the most? Thanks in advance for the feedback.
LOTS of Penn tutorials in vivid detail in the Penn subforum here. I'd recommend checking those out before even opening up a reel. Easy to lose parts- even if there are few. Ask me how I know? =)
Mr. Steelhead, I'd recommend the following to start:
Jigmaster 500
Senator 113H
Both of those reels (and their parts) are plentiful on eBay at very reasonable cost, and are perfect for learning the basics.
Have fun! ;)

Thank you!
You may want to look at a lever drag reel also. Once you see and understand how a star and lever drag work they all operate closely for the most part. There are some differences in the makes, models and manufactures but the two different drag systems will be similar in most reels.
