Wow, hand made? very good work, experience, it shows, Sal enjoy every day you dont do bricks, and then some. Great photo!
Very nice! Now get out there and get the paint chewed off of them.
His plugs are exceptional. I cant wait to get mine wet, albeit a little less excited about the almost guaranteed toothmarks they will receive.

Mark, that's what I intend to do ;). I don't mind having teeth marks on those, but I would be pretty upset if I lose one.
Maybe I'll use the reel on the right instead. :-\

Thanks Sal!
I'm glad you like them. I think you'll be even happier when you take them out for a swim! The last 5 or so years I've been using these more than anything else and have been very successful.
Yes, they will get banged up, tooth marks, and hook rash, but they will catch fish. IMO nothing beats a wood plug that's tuned properly.
The Slope head swimmer caught well over a hundred stripers this year. Fish from 20 to 45 lbs and I can tell you there's not a plastic plug in my box that's come close to it.
I have fewer than a dozen left if anyone is interested you can PM me. I'll try to post them up later this weekend.
Sal the pictures look great and the plugs look right at home with those Penn beauties. The next pic I want to see is them with a couple of COWS!

Lou. How do you use those plugs? Do you use them like surface poppers or do they dive? Do you think they will work down in Baja for big Rooster fish? I have caught Rooster fish with Chub lures. Also if you think the action on the lures will work what color do you think would be best. Matching the bait we troll caballito which is a 6-7 inch fish with dark silver on the back and light to white silver on the belly. Do you make such an animal. Dominick
Hi Dominick, The 2 plugs that Sal has pictured would be considered diving. I do make surface plugs but I wont be starting again until next season. The two colors that Mr. C posted are very versatile. Color's are important to a point but the action is what catches the fish! I have a friend that has used these for peacock bass with great success. Although they can be cast I prefer to do more trolling. With less fish around it gives you the opportunity to cover more ground in less time. Are you using surface plugs for the Roosters? If so, I'll look in my box and see if I can find some to post for you.

We usually do a slow troll with live bait. However my buddy NJ Joe and I woke up one morning and after breakfast went down to the marina and hired a Panguero to take us out fishing for Roosters just outside of the breaking surf. We played around with hula poppers and school buses and had a ball. You know when a wave heads toward the beach it leaves a flat water behind. We threw those lures in the flat water and made them splash on the retrieve. There is nothing like watching your lure disappear in a swirl and the fight is on. Those Roosters would use the surf to help in the fight, so one has to give some line to the surf and when the surf relaxes start to crank again. Great action. Dominick
Hey Dominick,
Have you done any rooster fishing from the beach?
That green jig Sal posted looks good.
Hey Lou, would this particular jig work for our hybrid freshwater stripers out here in CA? Looks like a good candidate.
I don't see why they wouldn't work on the hybrids. Most gamefish readily take plugs. One of my buddies who lives in Florida fishes them in the backwater tidal area's and has had snook, reds, small tarpon, barracuda, and even shark chew on them. I guess the sky's the limit!
A few years ago we made some big surface poppers for the tuna guys. It was a real project as the thru wire had to be over 3/32 of and inch to handle the strain. They worked really well. I was surprised when they asked for them in bright pink.
How big do the hybrid's get?
The stripers out here are mostly schoolie size, but when the cold winter starts and they plant some areas with trout some of the bigger stripers come in, 20-50#s. We use big line-thrus, soft baits, and wood plugs in the 8-14 inch range.
How long is the green one Sal posted?
Do you have any in that style for surface walk the dog technique?
Scott yes but only caught Jacks or grunts. The water behind the hotel I stay at has rough water behind the hotel. so fishing from the surf requires a long walk. I'm not up to long walks on the beach :D so I don't do much surf fishing. On occasion you can see the rooster comb zipping after bait. Dominick
Lou - fantastic job!
Sunday "T", the green plug is the pike. Great plug and its old school. Its 9" from lip to end and around 13" with bucktail. And Sal got the last one.
I have some other big plugs and also some great deals on commercial plugs. If your interested, PM me your email address and I'll send some pics and prices.
Thanks, .. Lou
