Title: Commercial shark fishing
Post by: Shark Hunter on December 14, 2015, 09:08:29 AM
I can't believe NOAA is going to do this. As of January 1st, there is going to be commercial shark fishing from boats at the amount of 36 per vessel per day on the gulf coast. This will wipe out the population.
There is a petition to be signed to delay it, but I doubt it will do any good.
This just goes to show, all of my efforts to be a responsible shark fisherman go ignored.
Protected species are not allowed to be kept by an angler, but the slaughter is permitted?
This just goes to show NOAA is a bunch of BS!
Please sign this petition for me and all other responsible shark fishermen.

Hey! They try to sneak this stuff through, you're not helping.

Signed. Thanks for the heads up Daron.

I used to be involved in fish politics, but the pure insanity involved, made ME insane.  I literally couldn't sleep at times. All politicos have two faces.

I learned to do what little I could do and walk away.

I signed early this morning. It must have been approved from high up for the FBI to block the web site to the petition .

Signing a Petition is useful --

But in this day and age of online petition gatherers, paid folks to run the organizations, and the ability to press a delete button -- there is a danger of these online petitions becoming routine, and therefore not taken as serioisly as the signers would hope.

The greater impact would be to have the Petition gathered documentation printed out -- then...

Follow up with a signed personal letter (not a form letter) -- most of us remember what these were...

These letters should be sent to your US Senators for your State, plus the Representative of Congress, for your district.  Congressional Representatives will not be concerned about your concerns -- unless you are a registered voter, in their district.

If enough folks write personal letters, in their own words -- coupled with a Petition, personal phone calls to the Senators and Congressmen -- and make their postion sensible and reasonable -- with no exaggerations or emotional emphasis -- we will have the best chance of succeeding at overturning this NOAA decision that is obviously based on lobbying by special interests.

If some of you personally know one of these representatives -- call them, visit them, and ask their help.

While it is a little work -- we can either do it, or we can just sit back and let the special interests and big government do whatever they wish -- while we complain about the weather.

Just my opinions.

Best,

Fred

I found the page that lists the 2016 Commercial Shark Fishing Quota.
Between Louisiana and Florida, if Every Shark caught weighed 300lbs, that would be over 3200 Sharks!
I guess my Passion is coming to an end. :'(
I knew it would end, just not like this.

This Commercial Shark Fishing thing --

Has anyone heard how it is turning out?

Or if it went through, or not?

My experience has been with government agencies -- once they move forward -- it is nearly impossible to stop them.

As for online petitions -- while a great cause -- one push of a delete button will erase all in a nano second.

I signed this petition (a good cause) -- now I get 2 or 3 emails every day asking me to sign other petitions -- everything from save the whales, PETA, save the polar bears, panda bears, desert mouse, and a ton of others.

I don't mind the causes -- but I do mind them giving my email address to every group that may or may not be legitimate -- or even reselling my address to other weird, obscure causes.

All of these causes seem to think I am their new, best friend...right.

Be careful when signing up for these petitions.

Best,

Fred

I'm getting bombarded by those as well. When I try to unsobscribe, they have a special message that makes you feel guilty if you do...I'm too soft :-\.

G'day Daron - had this update before unsubscribing:
QuoteWE DID IT! Thank you for making the Petition such a great success! We have opened the eyes of tens of thousands of people to the plight of shark fishing and we have altered the attitudes of many fishermen in the process. The result is that NOAA Fisheries is in the process of reviewing their policies and considering making many areas "sensitive" to shark fishing. The Petition is now closed but our efforts will march forward with your help! Richard

That there is pretty cool. Hopefully the "sensitive" areas are the better part of the ocean.

That's right off our coast. They do this every year. Freaks swimmers out. I don't recall a single shark attack in the 25 years I've been living down here (South Florida). I ought to go out looking for them in my kayak and try live-lining sharks. A few years ago a guy in a kayak hooked a grouper which was consumed by a shark which was then hooked and towed the guy a few miles up the coast before he cut the line. He had a long way to paddle back home. At least my kayak has a mirage drive... I think that would be a worthwhile experience even though I've got no chance of landing a shark on a kayak.
