Cross wind gear on my 850ss reel broke (alloy)
so 2 days ago phoned my contact in uk and
he sent me a bran new gear but not only bran new
but brass, it arrived today and there is some weight
to it, quality engineering.
So as i use my 750ss more i decided to take out the
alloy cross wind gear in that reel and put that in
my 850ss and put the new part along with the
original brass main gear in my 750ss, very nice
smooth as silk.
The 850ss and my 2 x 750ss have the original brass main gear
but now i want to buy 2 more of those brass cross wind gears
and have the full set.
There is just something about these reels that just ticks
my boxes.
Since been off here for awhile i had 18 good size fish
in a club match from the shore and i can't get enough
of these reels, im in love, hooked, am i going mad lol.
Well done to all who have caught and lost the battle.
Why would any body use an alloy gear? Describe the alloy if poss, a casting of sort, then machined? a disposable idea! I,m glad I didnt hav a say that day at the board of directors meeting!
Here you go Gary ;D :

I believe Paul was expressing how happy he was finding a replacement in brass and not that crappy aluminum ally found in most reels of today.
I prefer these over aluminum as well:

I agree, putting in a brass main gear (original) with a so light
so crappy so ahhhhh piece of paper something out of a christmas cracker
crosswind gear is beyond me.
All is well now, 1 done 2 to go, i feel naked thinking of Sal's collection,
im in (can't spell word i want to say, sounds like law lol) of the quality parts
and knowledge of Sal re these reels.

Sure am Sal, that's 1 750ss with both the original brass gear and
new brass crosswind gear, 2 to go, can get the parts but
just after christmas the funds are knackered.
It's your knowledge i knew what to look for, i know every part now
even the 231 part number of the new part bought.
Thanks Sal. ps we really need to talk lol.
Do not sell any of that stuff, im hopeing to win the lotto soon
and make you an offer for the lot and i will send you
a few 950ssm reels, sorry couldn't resist.
You're love of the Old SS series of penn spinners is shared by a ton of fishermen in Hawaii. They've landed a lot of big fish and with hardly any maintenance they last forever. My 2 9500ss and old 750ss all have brass main gears too, definitely superior to alloy ones.
Occasionally you can score an NOS one on ebay for reasonable money. Got a new 9500ss brass main for $25 last month.

Nice reels Yogi_fish808...In the early 90's there was a variety of custom SS-series parts coming out of Japan and making their way to Hawaii...Ball-bearing line rollers, stainless double dogs, upgraded handles, crosswind blocks, etc..
Being in high school at the time, those parts might as well have been on the moon for me; there was no way I could afford them...So what I ended up creating was a pair of stealth black SS 8500's, (the entire reel was black), pieced together using older/optional parts from Penn USA...8)

I've seen pics of some of the Japanese modded 9500's pretty impressive. Even as far as enlarging the drags on the top side. Mine have Adams titanium 16 tooth ar and double dogs, carbon/9500ssm drag upgrades and power handle. Id love to do a full black one tho!

Not certain about the 9500's, but on my 8500 I was able to create an all-black version using NOS parts from Penn's discontinued 747/757 series reels...I also remember ordering two of Penn's optional round black power handles, and later a pair of the new gasketed drag knobs when they first came out...Miss those reels..

Chad once it's got made in usa stick it in, great quality,
solid.
Just to add that brass crosswind gear i put in my 750ss reel
was original, huge weight to it.
Was talking to uk dealer and he said the owner from
penn years ago used to come over and they
would go out for dinner etc, he really knows his
stuff il give him that, he has thousands of
original ss parts.
The weight in my hand of the crosswind gear
was cut from a solid piece of brass, without
a shadow of doubt, great piece of engineering.
Didn't order through these guys as i know another guy,
they don't have the part avail, also some info chap
i got it from said when out with penn owner many years
ago he said the reason why some ss have the brass main gear
and alloy crosswind gear and some have the brass main gear
and brass crosswind gear is, he asked penn owner same question,
he replied "what they get up to on the night shift i don't want
to know, so whether there is any truth to that i don't know,
here is the part he sent to me.

I did mean :o that whoever decided to use the alloy parts where they are doing such an important job made a POOR decision. ;D
This what i meant, however it came out. ???
We should try to understand how this how this came to happen, as we all have worked for wages and been persuaded to do things that we were forced to for many reasons. The boss is not always right, :( but they are always the boss. :'(

Forums sometimes words can be taken the wrong way,
i for one love you guys, there you go i said it :D
Who cares who is right who is wrong its what makes
good reading.
I for one just love the knowledge you guys have on
these reels and very happy to be part of it.
That crosswind gear is some chunk of brass/bronze
(im not sure which one) but to cut the main gear
and crosswind gear out of that kind of quality
ticks all my boxes.
I was very happy indeed as Sal says finding such
a part and that is all that was meant, i hope
in a few weeks to buy 2 more and stick them
in my other 750ss and 850ss reels.
Fishing a shore comp in a few weeks so the
750ss reel is my first choice, just using it
on my beach caster puts a huge smile on
my face knowing whats inside. ;D
Just to add, my thought would be on this.
The hard working guys/girls years ago working
at penn in usa were basically given orders to
put in what they were told, i mean in a 6500ss
reel you have an alloy main gear and a brass/bronze
crosswind gear and in a 750ss a brass/bronze main gear
and an alloy crosswind gear, it kind of sticks out
what the thinking was, one but not both, that's just
my view on it, silly really but the boss is the boss
and wages are wages.
Paul, the earlier 650-750/850SS all came with brass gears as for crosswind, main and pinion.
Later Penn introduced the 6500-7500 and 9500'
They decided to place the cast aluminum gears in those, keeping the pinion brass.
If you purchase one of those today it would be as purchasing a fortune cookie, you will need to remove the side cover and there is a good chance that you'll find the brass gears.
I believe Penn put some of the leftover brass gears in those to use them up, but at the very beginning of when the change took place.
Why would they downgrade from brass to cast aluminum? I couldn't tell you.
I could speculate that the brass got too expensive to machine, or maybe that the reel was too good and needed some changes soo they could have more sales...I don't know.
There are some ( as me and you) that really love these reels, but as everything else, there are some that can't stand them...good, more for us ;)
The only issues I've found with these beauties is with the dogs and the inner side of the pinion, I still consider it normal wear and tear.
The stock dogs do fail, but we now have stainless steel dogs and ratchets.
The brass pinion, having the stainless steel shaft constantly going up and down through it, gets worn a bit at times, this happens on reels that are fished hard.
It isn't terrible, the reel will still function well, just a little extra movement with the spool.
It is not a problem for me, I use this one on my personal reel:

Later Paul.
Sal
Spot on Sal, got to the bottom of it, at the very
beginning you are 100% correct the 650ss,750ss
and 850ss all had the 3 brass gears, the part
is of the bronze/brass crosswind gear is
the same even the serial numbers are the
same 231-750 Number after it (can't remember)
but the white metal and the bronze/brass crosswind gear
are the same part just different materials.
Just ordered 3 more 231-750 (in bronze/brass)
and going to stick them in my other 750ss
and my 850ss, 3 full spec reels, it is not
as some think it goes on the handle, black
or chrome but the 3 bronze/brass gears.
Learning all the time. ;D
3 x 231-750 (Bronze, original) crosswind gears arrived today,
had one in one of my 750ss so just a matter of putting
in the other 2 in my other 750ss reel and my 850ss reel.
I have 1 as a spare for a future 750ss if a bran new one
comes up ;D
So that's 2 x 750ss and 1 x 850ss reels with the three amigos lol.
1. Original Bronze main gear
2. Original Bronze pinion gear
3. Original Bronze crosswind gear
Thanks Sal for your huge knowledge on these reels,
they also feel super smooth.
