Title: Quick Baitrunner question
Post by: FatTuna on February 18, 2016, 07:44:57 AM
Anyone know if these can be removed from the shaft on the old baitrunners? I have a 6500B that is making a noise under the rotor. I hate removing the E-clips on the crosswind block on these reels. Don't want to risk damaging the reel by forcing it if it's not supposed to come off.

On my 4500 B's, the clicker ratchet is pressed onto the shaft and cannot be removed by hand.

The washers however are removable.

Thanks Chad. That is a disappointing answer but nevertheless, the one I was expecting.   I have had the same experience; however, I have seen a few that have come free. I don't think they were meant to but they did. I forget whether or not it went back on okay. There is a part of me that wants to force it off. I would have to try it on one of my reels first. I really don't feel like taking it apart again, lol. The 6500B is the bane of my existence. I'd rather service a dora the explorer spincast setup. For real.

I know the "D" models it comes off. The earlier ones do not. If it wiggles it will come off. If you lose one of the clips just let me know.

Use 2 picks to remove the clips.

Thanks for the confirmation guys. Looks like I will have to remove the clips to get in there. I will take you up on that offer if I need it.

I now use one of these - One of the best little tools I have ever bought - reinforces the 'no fly zone' - the clip can't escape ;D

http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/circlip-pliers/0831078/

Both ends are sprung loaded to hold an E clip - one end has a sprung loaded 'hook' to pull the clip - the other end are simple sprung jaws to insert a clip.
On the hooked end I ground a small amount off the tip - enables me get closer to the shaft for tiny E clips. Picked up  a used one off fleabay :)

Made me laugh.. :D

I took a closer look, and the shaft is knurled to grip the ratchet; Definitely a press-fit. I suppose you could drill a hole in a thick piece of wood to support the shaft, then place another piece of wood over the end of the shaft, and gently try tapping it out as you would do for a bearing stuck on a main gear. These shafts are thin though, so probably only a small amount of leeway before risking damage.

Figured out how to remove those clips. Thanks for the tips guys.

Btw, I learned something about the click ratchets on the old Shimanos today. I had another baitrunner that had a loose one. Because it wasn't being held in place, the click tongue under spool was only intermittently making contact.... Those need to be securely fastened to the spool shaft in order to work properly. I wouldn't advise trying to remove them.
