I came across this photo of an OC 112 with a peculiar-looking left side bushing.

A seach on the subject wasn't very helpful.

Is this early an early form of cast-control, and if so how did it work?

An interesting device indeed, one that uses the properties of heavy oil to make a fast-spinning spool manageable.

These fluid hubs pop up from time to time, except if you are looking for one!
