Post by: Marcq on April 05, 2016, 01:17:30 AM

(http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/ww177/Marc1956/penn%20114_zpsph1ws31i.jpg) (http://s717.photobucket.com/user/Marc1956/media/penn%20114_zpsph1ws31i.jpg.html)

What is out there for upgrades? It comes with a metal spool, will be changing that for an alu one what else?

Thanks, Marc..

SS gear sleeve, yoke, & dog. No gears available. 114H Tib or Accurate frame will fit. Same handles available for the 114H will fit. Not as many options as a 114H. If it has 3 washer drags, 5 washer drags are available from Scott's.     Rudy

Looking at that picture Marc, you are going to need a handle side bushing as well.

Compared to a 9/0, I don't think it has the groceries. ;)
The smallest reel I bring is a 114H from the beach.

Two different Animals Sal. That is another one of a kind based on the 114H, not the 114.
The 114H Based Wex is a 9/0 on steroids, as is your unique reel.
The regular 114 just doesn't have the guts.
I have at least a half dozen Tanked 9/0's.
I really think they are the most powerful Senators there are in a compact package.
Until I get a 10 footer under my belt, I will be running 12 and 14/0's and a 9/0 on the side. ;)

Yup, the 114 is different animal... still very capable reel.

Marc, the 114 will make a great Grouper reel  for the biggins. :D It will pull like a winch with it's 2 to 1 gearing.

I have one of these too.  I need to make a drag kit for them as they are excellent grouper reels, but there is a need for a little bit more drag to stop those monsters.

Marc,

I don't think you can change over from the original Chrome / Brass spool over to the Aluminum one from a Penn 114 H . . .

The shafts are different, because the 114 uses Bushings and the 114H uses Ball-Bearings.

I have a very clean, original 114 Chrome/ Brass spool, if you are interested ?

If you have already gotten an Aluminum spool for a 114H, I would be willing to do a "straight swap", depending on the condition of the aluminum spool.

This is the difference between a 114 Spool and a 114H Spool . . .

114 is on the LEFT . . . 114H is on the RIGHT !

What's it take to remove the spindle from a chromed bronze spool? Would it be possible to swap spindles to make a 114 spool usable in a 114h? Would it be worth the trouble?

I saw Sal knocked a spindle out of a plastic spool; it was just press-fit, maybe with some adhesive, but it was a very tight fit. These are of different construction. Are the spindles on these spools one-piece, or are they threaded into each end?

Why would you want to put a 114 spool in a 114H? Both options (aluminum & chrome/bronze) are already available for both reels.

Yep,

And any time I mess with a spool -- there is a good chance of it not ever running true again.

Once, I was able to straighten the end shaft on a 146 spool on a Squidder Jr. belonging to Aiala.

This takes at least ten minutes of careful observation, experience, luck, and knowing where another new replacement spool might be located.

This is a highly technical and classified operation involving a nylon faced hammer, and two careful blows.

We don't tell clients about this one.

Best,

Fred

I never knew Penn made an Aluminum Spool for the regular 114 . . . I still think it would be wise to give Scott's a call to confirm before plunking down $55 ( OUCH ) for a spool . . .

The reason I say that is it says "114 Fits All Versions" on Scott's website and I'm leery.

Also, it's possible that is for the newer "Chinese" Penn 114 reels . . . Have they made any changes ? Are they still "bushing" reels" ?

The SCHEMATIC for the 114L uses the word "BEARING" and not "BUSHING" fpr PRAT #'s 40 & 55  . . .  ( ATTACHED )

The spool will fit Dave . The 114H has a different part number. I have a few 114's with aluminum spools.
This is the 114HL for the 114H.
https://www.mysticparts.com/PennParts/Parts/29L-114HL.aspx (https://www.mysticparts.com/PennParts/Parts/29L-114HL.aspx)
They actually made the Black 114 with a factory aluminum frame.

Good idea! You never know. But the newer model spool don't share the same part number, like the 114h spool is 29L-114HL and more expensive, and the Chinese version is 29-114H2 and less expensive one
I will contact them

I picked that one up a while ago Marc on an ebay Troll. ;)
I can put it in an old 6/0 just to make sure if you like.

Rudy, it was a hypothetical. I've been wondering how spools are constructed for a while. I started a thread asking for spool info and got no response.

Sid, check with Sal. He took a metal one apart with a little heat & whacked it with a mallet. He sent it to Tom (Cortez) and that's the last I heard of it. I think the shafts have a very slight taper & are probably assembled with a press in a jig to get it centered correctly.       Rudy

Rudy, I saw that post, but I thought it was a plastic spool with a press-fit metal spindle. But I'm interested in the Penn spool history. What they made first, why it had problems, what they did to correct things, etc., etc. I'm going to find that post of a month or two ago and add photos of some of my spools to try to generate discussion. The mechanical problems driving the spool changes is what interests me most.

Rudy, you've been a busy beaver here tonight! Thanks for the PMs and help!
