Post questions about this reel in this thread
Love these little reels. Here is my 109 that I added a custom knob. Sorry for those who already seen the pictures.
Doesn't the big knob make casting your 109 difficult? With no free spool, the handle turns when you cast or let out line...
Gotta 109M. The direct drive aspect keeps me from tryin to cast it.
Haven't got to try casting yet, but the knob is really small
I "was gifted" a couple 109's, ...in pieces.....and I have a couple questions about this one. I'm "assuming" that it's a fairly "old" one...plastic spool, black in color, and has a "hex head" on the level wind bearing. Anyway, can someone confirm that it IS an older issue ? The other one is red in color,.....and has some "ID numbers" scratched into the plate!....,and has a metal spool. Both reels show little , if any , corrosion, A lot of the screws are "missing in action" , as well as one stand. The stand I have is marked "30-109S", and I *think* it's for the "red" reel ? Can anyone confirm that ?.......thanks
I "think" the S on the stand means saltwater. Sorry but that's the extent of my knowledge.
Yes, that handle on the black reel has the older style knobs, indicating it to be an early 109. G is right...the "s" is for saltwater stand...and there was an "f" for freshwater. It's a safe bet the numbered stand goes with the red reel. 8)
Here's a pair of 1942 first year 109 reels. 1942 was the only year the reels had the anti-backlash control. Knob is adjustable and located on the head plate.
Nice reels Chris! I love the handles!
Didn't know they ever had any type of backlash control, I'd love to see the inner workings of that!
Chad the adjustment screw pushes in and out on this (felt?rubber?) knob, which rubs the inside of the plastic spool. This causes constant friction. I can see why it was discontinued.
Those are particularly nice looking 109s. I'm fond my two old 109s.
Nice reels Chris !! Keep going ! John Taylor
Thanks for the pictures Chris, very cool!
That is an interesting casting control. Good score on that pair !
Still have 2 or 3 109MF Penns, used them for trolling Spoonplugs back in the day. Spooled them with Buck's NO BO mono, a heavy metered line with the stretch baked out. Worked great, tough little reels.

Charlie
All,
I was recently gifted a Peer 109, the chrome and side plates are flawless and seem unfished. However, the plastic? grips on the handle appear to have been sprayed with a solvent or gasoline, they are shrunken onto their posts and otherewise useless. I am on the hunt for a replacement handle. If I could get my computer to recognize my phone, I might be able to post some pictures.
Thanks,
Stan "Buster" Cowton
Those deformed knobs are from a different type plastic that Penn used for a short time. Shrunk and deformed is a good description.
There may be a member here that can help you out, or you may find one on ebay for a fair price.
Maxed Out,
Thanks for the info, any idea of the age range?
A 24-85. I think a 24-60 will work. Probably any handle that fits a 98-155 or 98-60 gear sleeve. I may have a couple I can give away.
Mystic also has a list of compatible handles.I know the 9 handles are same.Type A sleeve with appropriate star.

Without a picture, a guess on dating your 109, would be late 1940's.
The 109 handle spins when casting, or when letting line out, so the stock twin handle is imperative to maintain a balance when the handle spins as line is coming off the spool. A single knob with a counterbalance will make the reel wobble like crazy when line is coming off the spool. A stock twin knob is the only way to go on a 109. Penn did make a single knob type for a 109 (part# 24-109)...but I prefer the twin knob type. Both will work fine. Heres a pic of the single knob style for a 109
Ok. Listen to Ted. But here are some spare part handles if you want one or two. Note the gear-sleeves; a 98-60(silver) and 2-brass 98-155's. Same thing, only the diameter of the A/R cog is different.
2nd picture are some I could give away. Bottom-24-57 for a 114H, middle-23-56(fits 98-155 or 98-60 gear sleeve)and some kinda unknown International at top.
The 2 small ones in the 2nd picture are for a Penn Levelmatic(930) and won't fit anything we're talking about. One of these days I'm gonna remember to check my spare parts before I sell/give a reel away sos I can INCLUDE them before sending...
