Daron this ones for you. Everol 18/0 on a custom almost 9' Chaos custom Shark Unlimited Rod.
I'm spooling the bottom with 200lb braid and he will decide the top shot.
I'll get some pictures of the rod in a few.
WOW!!!!!!
Nice Keith. I want to see Daron hook one with that combo!
Bob
Awesome looking beast of a reel for the serious shark killer :o
I went with straight 200 lb mono on mine. if I can't turn him. He was not meant to be caught. ;)

Here is a shot of the rod.
Daron this was caught off the Navarre Pier just last week. Mako taken to eat I assume. You can see the reel in one picture.
That is a beautiful Mako. I get a lot more satisfaction watching them swim away. ;)
Big damn fish!

Me too. I would never go through all that work to get a fish up like that. Let it go to catch again.

True dat. I am not looking forward to just relining 14/0.
Big reels and big sharks! ;)
That doesn't look like a Mako in the 2nd picture?
I'm not a shark man - but maybe it's a blue :-\ Long snout, pointy teeth rather than triangular :-\
It does look like a different animal..
Second one is a male sand bar. 1st one is Kennys 10'5" mako caught on an everol 14/0.
Daron, I still can't get over the 18/0 with straight mono. 900yrds or so is what you said? A 600yrd drop leaves you with 300yrds to play with. Those makos and big duskies will take that with 50lbs of drag in less than a minute.
I plan on 300 to 400 yard drops with this rig. If I lose 300 yards in a minute, I'm not going to stop it.
It gets deep in Navarre pretty quick.
You have a lot more experience than me, This is just how I chose to fill it.
I figure with 5 or 600 yards on the spool of 200lb test. That is pretty good odds in my thinking.
I don't want to get into a two hour battle with a Megalodon.
We all make mistakes, you just have to learn from them. ;)
The same people catch huge mako's off the beach every year. They don't always have a choice whether to release them or not. They fight to the last. Last year, there was a picture with a huge one in his pickup bed. If you get spooled you can get more mono. Just don't go skiing into the gulf. :o
I'm going to fish the 18/0 this trip just like it is.
It has been serviced and spooled by me. No one else.
300 yard drops with primo bait. This reel has the muscle that can bring in a monster. I just hope I'm up to the challenge when it happens.
My boy Michael will be with me and I hope this reel goes off when He and I are together. He is in a lot better shape than me.
This reel is capable of 80lbs of drag at full spool.
I have the best gear there is for my sport. I just hope the Shark Gods Shine on us, and we have a good release.
Nothing will pump you up more than watching a true monster of the deep swim away after you have tamed him. ;)
i'm not sure I want to work 80 lbs of drag with the rod in a gunwhale holder....
Don't you have a trip coming in a couple of weeks?
Yes I Do John,
I was just stating what the reel is capable of.
Best of luck!!!! I always enjoy your write-ups and pics. Are you going to give us a pregame on the setups and rigging?
I remember two years ago Mr. Shark called it "Alan Tani Shark Week"... will this be "Alan Tani Shark Week III"?
Keeping my fingers crossed for perfect weather and hoping that this turns out to be The Year of the Monster! ;D
~A~
Thanks Guys and gals.
John,
It takes so much gear, I don't know where to start.
My main tools will be my Everol 18/0, A 14/0 and a 12/0 with all the hot rod parts available. SS Sleeves, Inserts, gears and Handle upgrades. Straight mono on all 3. 200lb on the 18, 130lb on the 14 and 100lb on the 12.
My Bait rods will be a Fin Nor Lt-100 on a 7' Penn Mariner rod and probably a 4300 ultra light and a 9500.
Kayak, Coolers, Bolt Cutters, Rod Holders, Dehooker, Extra rigs, plenty of Insect repellent, Chairs, EZ Up, Head lamps, Glo sticks for night patrol on the Kayak, Life Jackets, Two way radios and on and on.
All I need is a little luck. ;)
And a partridge in a pear tree...nice arsenal, if that doesn't do it I don't know what would. Good luck and looking forward to pics!!!
Go for it Buddy, have a great trip.
Mike U.K.
Daron the freeze is getting full!!
Good to Hear! ;D
Check out this Vintage Shark reel..!

2 Mako Sharks caught in Navarre from a Kayak.
One he got on camera.
Blacktip not Mako.

Blacktip not Mako.
I was gonna say something like 'that's the strangest looking Mako I have ever seen, and I'be seen hundreds', but thought better of it. Thanks for clearing that up!
John
The water temp is perfect for them right now.
75 degrees keeps them active.
I'll be there in a few days.
All the best Daron.

i know this probably isn't necessary, but Daron, make sure you keep us in the loop with photos of your fishing adventures...
Sid
I always do Sid. ;)
I first said Mako b/c he caught a Mako in the same area the week before. I'm getting reports that the Mako bite is turning on for bait and beach fisherman.
Daron, you forgot to invite the local Hammer Magnet ::)
Best of luck to you guys, I want to see pics of at least a 10' beast on the 18/0.
And even a 10' will likely get skull dragged to shore by that reel.
Stay safe out there my friend.
I sent you a pm John.

I figured something like that was the case :)
It still amazes me that guys are catching Makin from the beach.
These are really the ultimate shark, and a true blue water Pelagic species. Also, they are very good eating. Some of those Hammerheads are darn impressive as well. I can see the appeal.
As always, I wish you the best if luck Daron!
I know you come fully prepared, and likely stocked well with good bait, and information in addition to the gear.
Now hopefully you are blessed with good conditions, and some luck as well ;)
The Forecast looks Good. I have one more day of work. Then its time to pack up and head South.
I Thank everyone for the well wishes. I'm going to need it.
I'm hoping my Boy Mike gets hooked up on a Good Shark. It is his Time.
The hard part is Juggling Family Vacation time and Sharkin'.
Either one is my Favorite. No work, No grass cutting, No alarm Clocks, No Stress and No Chores. Just The Beach and My Family. The Sharks are just a Bonus. ;)
Life is Good. ;D
Vacation all day and fish all night. Sleep in a lawn chair with your head next to the clicker. ;)

Steve,
The Clickers on my Big Senators are so loud. They will wake the dead.
Double stainless dogs on an aluminum spool will wake up Davy Jones.
Problem is, I can't sleep with my baby's in the water.
There is too much at stake. ;)
The Leviathan is close. So very close.
I can sleep when I'm in bed and my rods and reels are next to me. Not 500 yards into Leviathans's Lair.
I hit the Beach to fish around 5 or 6pm. All the tourists have had enough sun by then.
I'll stay out there until at least 1am. Hopefully longer if my fishing partners are willing.
Sharks are night feeders.
I'm not asking for much, just a 10 footer. 120" of Lemon, Tiger, Hammer, Mako. I just need to get into the 10' Club.
It is a personal goal of mine.
Watching a monster like that swim away from me is all the satisfaction I need. ;)

John,
Come on down this coming weekend. 13th, 14th and 15th will be fine.
Its always great to see you and Nathaniel.
I'm at the same place as last year. Sugar Beach.
See you Soon
The last 3 days have been north cool winds keeping the nearshore beach waters calm. It's been beautiful weather. I'm heading to the dock to catch some Speckled Sea Trout right now and will take a picture.
